Electron Microscope Scientist

We are looking for an Electron Microscope Scientist to support the Vaccine Research Center (VRC) at NIAID by overseeing cryo-electron microscopy operations and supporting structural biology research. This is a full-time position located in Bethesda, MD.

Responsibilities include:

• Providing scientific, technical, and operational oversight of the cryo-EM facility.
• Supporting structural biology research through high-quality cryo-EM data acquisition and analysis.
• Managing facility operations, including instrument performance, user access, and workflow optimization.
• Overseeing operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of cryo-EM instrumentation.
• Performing cryo-EM sample preparation, data collection, and computational analysis.
• Training and supporting users, including students, postdocs, and senior scientists.
• Collaborating with NIH investigators and providing guidance on experimental design.
• Developing and implementing standardized workflows, SOPs, and best practices.
• Monitoring project timelines, instrument usage, and overall facility performance.

Qualifications include:

• Ph.D. in Biology or a closely related field.
• A minimum of THREE (3) years of experience in cryo-electron microscopy, structural biology, or related research.
• Demonstrated expertise in cryo-EM workflows, instrumentation, and facility operations.
• Experience with cryo-EM data collection, processing, and analysis.
• Ability to maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot advanced microscopy instrumentation.
• Strong organizational, project management, and multitasking skills.
• Ability to support and train a diverse scientific user base.
• Strong collaboration, communication, and leadership skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and scientific data tools.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a Federal or DoD "public trust"; candidates must receive approved adjudication prior to onboarding with Guidehouse. Candidates with an active public trust or suitability are preferred.

Nice to have:

• Background supporting shared scientific core facilities or user-based research environments.
• Familiarity with high-throughput cryo-EM data collection and automation tools.
• Exposure to negative-stain EM workflows and complementary imaging techniques.
• Ability to optimize workflows for improved throughput, reproducibility, and data quality.

The annual salary range for this position is $74,000.00-$. Compensation decisions depend on a wide range of factors, including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, security clearances, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
