Assistant Scientific Director - Child and Family Programs

HJF is seeking an Assistant Scientific Director to support the CSTS Director and Scientific Director in scientific planning, administration, and management efforts pertaining to the Child & Family Program. The position will support the Department of Psychiatry / Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress. The role involves initiating and carrying out Child & Family Program research projects in collaboration with a research team, and provides guidance and direction to CSTS Scientists, Research Assistants, Postdocs, and Fellows.

The Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress (CSTS) is one of the nation’s oldest and most highly regarded academic‑based organizations dedicated to advancing trauma‑informed knowledge, leadership and methodologies. CSTS addresses a wide scope of trauma exposure from combat, terrorism, disasters, and evaluates risk factors associated with suicidal behaviors. CSTS is part of the Uniformed Services University (USU) and its Department of Psychiatry.

The Department maintains active research funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, National Institute of Drug Abuse, National Science Foundation, the Department of the Army and the Department of the Air Force, and collaborates with the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine.

• Supports CSTS Director and Scientific Director in scientific planning, administration, and management.
• Works directly with Center Scientists to foster grant funding and developing scientific projects and seeks grant funding in support of CSTS. Prepares and submits grant applications.
• Attends Directors’ meetings.
• Represents CSTS Child & Family Program in USU, DoD, and other national meetings.
• Designs, develops, executes, implements, and prepares scientific research reports and publications.
• Performs behavioral science research, designs and conducts data analysis, and prepares manuscripts for publication in professional journals or books.
• Develops and implements up‑to‑date methodology related to psychiatric, behavioral and psychological health projects.
• Interprets and applies data analytic tools both independently and in collaboration with Center Data Analysts and Center Scientists.
• Prepares manuscripts for publication, and manages IRB and grant administration issues. Educates Center Scientists on these procedures.
• Responsible for training of Center Scientists, Research Assistants, Postdocs, and Fellows.
• Personnel and human resources administration and maintenance in support of the Child & Family Program, including recruitment, hire, and promotion actions of Child & Family Program personnel.
• Coordinating the decision‑making process between program participants.
• Timeline/calendar development and maintenance.
• Supporting science processes.
• Facilitating information flow between program members, scientific directors, and the Foundation.
• Integration and coordination of key Child & Family Program project personnel.
• Directs, coordinates, and conducts personnel actions and furnishes guidance and assistance as needed.
• Leads and assists with planning, development, and conducting of professional seminars and conferences sponsored by the Center.
• Leads, participates, and oversees scientific data collection in the field in civilian environments and hospitals and military installations and hospitals.
• Collaborates with professionals at other research and academic institutions.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

• Direct authority to make decisions on employee hiring, disciplinary action, starting salaries and merit increases; conduct employee performance evaluations and directs work activities.

• Doctoral Degree required. Ideally an MD, a PhD in Psychology, Developmental Psychology or a related field.
• 10+ years’ experience required.
