The Laboratory of Structural Cell Biology at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, NIH, is now seeking a motivated postdoctoral fellow interested in integrative structural biology, cryo-electron tomography, and disease-relevant cell biology to join their team.

About the position

Our lab studies how cellular architecture and molecular organization control biological function. We combine cryo-electron tomography, single-particle cryo-EM, correlative light and electron microscopy, cell biology, biochemistry, and computational image analysis to understand cellular and disease mechanisms at molecular resolution.

This postdoctoral fellow will develop and lead projects based on their scientific interests, expertise, and fit with the lab’s research program. Potential research areas include:

  • In situ structural biology of neuronal injury, axon repair, and regeneration
  • Cryo-ET analysis of cytoskeletal and membrane remodeling in cells
  • Integrative analysis of cell signaling, membrane organization, and disease-associated cellular states
  • Cryo-FIB/cryo-ET workflows for primary cells, cultured cells, and tissue-derived samples
  • Subtomogram analysis, structural interpretation, and integration with functional cell biology
  • Development of new workflows for connecting cellular phenotypes to molecular mechanisms

Dependent upon each applicants experience and interests, these projects may include cell culture, primary neuronal or disease-relevant primary cellular models, cryo-sample preparation, tomography data collection, image processing, subtomogram averaging, and structural modeling.

This position is best suited for a candidate who enjoys integrative and technically challenging research. Our lab provides a collaborative environment with abundant access to state-of-the-art cryo-EM/cryo-ET instrumentation and computational resources. This postdocs will have the opportunity to develop ideas, contribute to ongoing projects, publish first-author work, present at scientific meetings, and receive individualized supports for fellowships, grants, and career development.

The position has a flexible start date. Salary will follow NIH postdoctoral stipend guidelines.

We welcome candidates with backgrounds in cryo-EM/cryo-ET, structural biology, cell biology, biophysics, neuroscience, membrane biology, cytoskeleton, and/or biochemistry. Prior cryo-ET experience is an advantage, but candidates with strong biological or structural training who are eager to learn in situ structural approaches are also encouraged to apply.

Disclaimer/Fine Print

U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible to apply. NIH welcomes foreign nationals with the exception of individuals from this list .
