Scientist
We are seeking a Scientist to independently provide support services to satisfy the overall operational objectives of the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The primary objective is to provide services and deliverables through performance of support services. This is a full-time, on-site role in Bethesda, MD.
Responsibilities include:
- Conduct laboratory-based translational research with a focus on drug development for the treatment of cancer.
- Study cultured human and animal cell lines, including those derived from cancer tissue, and analyze cancerous and noncancerous human and animal tissues.
- Operate advanced genetic, biological, and biochemical assays.
- Perform confocal immune-confocal microscopy of cells.
- Perform studies that result in technical reports and information to advance cancer research.
- Initiate, design, and develop new projects and assays that support external collaborators and NCI in advancing cancer research, diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines.
- Provide subject matter expertise in the tumor biology under study and the assays being performed.
- Interpret results of initial analysis to reveal conclusions and shortcomings; identify pitfalls in the original choice of methods or experimental direction; redirect the study to achieve improved results.
- Identify the need for further investigations and/or propose changes in direction of work considering accomplishments, findings, and current and future mission objectives.
- Collaborate with scientific staff in identifying key research questions future in vitro and in vivo studies can address.
- Collaborate with scientists and statisticians across NCI, NIH, and extramural research institutions, as appropriate, to advance research projects and interpretation of cancer-related data.
- Consult with NIH/NCI expert staff to clarify needs and project objectives.
- Present at conferences and seminars, and participate in committees, panels, and forums that establish policy or plan activities in the field.
- Prepare data sets, tables and figures for collaborative papers prepared for publication in peer-reviewed journals; assemble and draft papers for first-author publication in peer-reviewed papers.
Qualifications include:
- PhD in Biology, Life Sciences, or related fields.
- Minimum of TWO (2) years of laboratory research experience in the areas of immunology, molecular biology, or similar disciplines.
- Expertise in mouse handling procedures.
- Experience with immunology research techniques.
- Proficiency in molecular biology techniques.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Federal or DoD "public trust"; candidates must receive approved adjudication prior to onboarding with Guidehouse. Candidates with an active public trust or suitability are preferred.
Nice to have:
- Experience with confocal microscopy.
- Knowledge of proper laboratory techniques, disposal methods, safety procedures, and universal precautions.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to work independently on projects.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, interpersonal, and time management skills.
- Strong communications skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to learn new techniques and teach known techniques to others.
The annual salary range for this position is $65,000.00-$. Compensation decisions depend on a wide range of factors.
