Overview
The National Institutes of Health (NIH), Office of Strategic Coordination (OSC), invites Post‑Master's and Postdoctoral candidates to participate in an immersive STEM learning fellowship designed to foster scientific exploration and professional growth. Participants will engage in guided research and mentorship with leading NIH scientists while delving into innovative strategies for advancing biomedical and behavioral sciences. The fellowship focuses on transformative approaches to addressing critical public health challenges, understanding how large‑scale, milestone‑driven initiatives tackle pressing health priorities, and training future biomedical scientists.
Fellows will also enhance their expertise in scientific communication by designing investigator workshops, webinars, and outreach initiatives.
- Exploring Research Methodologies:
Gain experience in designing scoping reviews and landscape analyses, learn systematic review techniques and data synthesis methods to examine topics such as health disparities and chronic disease, and translate findings into scholarly publications. - Understanding Milestone‑Driven Initiatives:
Develop expertise in evaluating large‑scale scientific efforts, learning how to assess research rigor, track milestones, and manage complex public health portfolios. - Enhancing Scientific Communication:
Build interpersonal and communication skills by designing investigator workshops, webinars, and outreach strategies to foster collaboration and tailor scientific messaging to diverse biomedical audiences.
- Learn to navigate NIH databases and utilize data analysis tools.
- Identify metrics and indicators for evaluating scientific initiatives.
- Compare outcomes across various collaborative research programs.
- Develop recommendations for future programs based on data‑driven insights.
Fellows are expected to be fully engaged, either in‑person or hybrid. The in‑person or hybrid location is Bethesda, MD.
CompensationMonthly stipend to help offset living and other expenses. Stipend rates are determined by NIH officials and range from $75,000 to $88,000 yearly. NIH may provide a health insurance supplement for the monthly premium costs if you elect the ORAU/ORISE plan.
Appointment LengthThe appointment will initially be for one year and may be renewed annually for up to four years, contingent on the availability of funds.
Selection ProcessInitial review of applications will occur on July 1, 2026. Thereafter, applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis throughout the 2026 calendar year, and selections will be made as projects for participation become available.
Nature of AppointmentThis program is administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) and was established through an inter‑agency agreement between DOE and NIH. Participants do not become employees of NIH, DOE, ORISE, nor ORAU, and there are no employment‑related benefits.
QualificationsThe candidate must be 18 years or older at the time of application and should be currently pursuing or have received a master’s or doctoral degree in a relevant field within the last five years of the appointment start date. Current graduate students who are nearing degree completion may apply but must have completed their degrees by the start of the fellowship.
Citizenship RequirementsThe opportunity is open to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents, and foreign nationals.
