HJF is seeking a Scientist II to develop and supervise research projects, investigate the feasibility of applying scientific principles to potential inventions and products, develop new technologies and protocols, and manage laboratory operations. The incumbent will be responsible for day‑to‑day laboratory management, teaching advanced procedures, supervising technicians, and overseeing administrative functions such as space, personnel, and supply management. The role also includes keeping up to date with grant submissions and progress reports.

The Scientist II will focus on breast cancer immuno‑oncology treatments, including cell therapies such as TIL, gamma‑delta T cells, CART cells, bi‑specific antibody therapeutics, and IND application preparation.

This position supports the Department of Pathology at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Bethesda, Maryland, under Dr. Geeta Upadhyay, Ph.D. Research areas include cancer biology, immunopathology, human immunity and vaccine development, vector‑borne infectious diseases, radiation biology, neurobiology, and laboratory genomic medicine.

Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners, supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit the armed forces and civilians alike.

Responsibilities
  • Plan, execute, and oversee laboratory research; formulate experimental hypotheses and designs protocols.
  • Monitor scientific literature and prepare written reports, manuscripts for journals, and patent applications.
  • Coordinate and prepare new grant and funding applications.
  • Process and interpret experimental data.
  • Make scientific observations, maintain detailed workbooks and documentation, and ensure compliance with professional standards.
  • Collaborate with technical and professional staff; train and supervise technical personnel.
  • Manage, lead, and mentor staff; monitor productivity, adjust staffing, and address peak and slack periods.
  • Work with section supervisors and the laboratory director on complex problems; identify, evaluate, and present solutions.
  • Ensure standardization and enforce good clinical practices for CAP accreditation; assist in QA/QC plans and procedures.
  • Participate in identifying disease situations and design appropriate laboratory support.
  • Take on budgetary responsibilities, including planning, forecasting, preparation, and approval.
  • Maintain laboratory information systems for two sections; identify information needs, recommend improvements.
  • Oversee and ensure appropriate training for employees; write user manuals, establish priorities, and maintain security and confidentiality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Lead and train technicians, direct work assignments, and provide input on performance evaluations.
Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • Doctoral degree required.
  • Minimum of 5‑8 years of experience required.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Proficiency in pancreatic orthotopic models and human tissue organoid/carcinoids with a proven publication record; antibody engineering experience highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of complex scientific procedures in immuno‑oncology, including small molecules, CART, and bi‑specific antibodies.
  • Experience with multi‑color flow cytometry.
  • Knowledge of FDA requirements in drug development.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical procedures.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Tier 1/Public Trust background check.
Work Environment
  • Primarily a laboratory setting.
Compensation
  • Annual salary range: $93,100 – $94,000; actual salary determined by experience and education.
