Position: Advanced Practice Provider (NP III or PA III) - NIAID / Laboratory of Infectious Disease (LID)

Program Description

Leidos Biomedical Research Inc. operates the Frederick National Laboratory (FNL) to address biomedical challenges in cancer, AIDS, drug development, nanotechnology, and emerging infectious diseases. Within FNL, the Clinical Research Directorate (CRD) provides strategic operational support to NIH’s National Institutes of Health (NIH) research initiatives, assisting with monitoring, regulatory affairs, pharmacovigilance, protocol development, and project management for over 400 clinical trials annually.

Roles & Responsibilities
  • Assists with screening participants for eligibility using protocol‑specific inclusion and exclusion criteria.
  • Assists in the preparation and execution of the informed consent process for eligible individuals.
  • Works with a multidisciplinary clinical team to provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care for patients with infectious diseases, primarily viral infections, and primary immunodeficiency disorders.
  • Provides medical evaluation for subjects in clinical trials in collaboration with the principal investigator and other team members.
  • Reviews and summarizes outside medical records, obtains medical history, performs physical examinations, and monitors the medical status of research subjects.
  • Assesses acute and non‑acute clinical problems and toxicities, and documents and grades side effects from study interventions.
  • Orders appropriate research‑related testing and interprets results from diagnostic and laboratory studies.
  • Provides patient and staff education and establishes rapport with patients and families.
  • Participates in clinical rounds, meetings, and conferences related to study protocols.
  • Completes documentation through written progress notes and communication.
  • Collects data as required, assists with data organization and assessment for publication manuscripts.
  • Maintains clinical competence and complies with licensure, certification, and applicable regulations.
  • Assumes administrative responsibilities as needed.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution or four (4) years of relevant experience (foreign degrees evaluated for U.S. equivalency).
  • For Physician Assistants: graduate of an accredited PA program, completion of the NCCPA exam, and Maryland State Board eligibility.
  • For Nurse Practitioners: degree from a state‑accredited nursing program, active state registration, appropriate certification (AANP or ANCC), and Maryland State Board eligibility.
  • Pending Maryland license documentation for all applicants.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible nurse practitioner or physician assistant experience.
  • Effective communication, teamwork, and relationship‑building skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time‑management abilities.
  • Knowledge of disease relationships, health assessment, counseling, diagnostic testing, pharmacology, and primary medical management.
  • Ability to conduct studies in accordance with FDA Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and institutional SOPs.
  • Availability to work on‑site during regular clinic hours Monday–Friday (excluding federal holidays).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of ICH/GCP guidelines and clinical research ethics.
  • Basic knowledge of standard clinical research protocols and procedures.
  • Experience supporting clinical trials, especially IND studies.
  • Clinical experience with infectious disease and/or immunology.
  • NPs credentialed across the lifespan and PAs with comparable training.
