About the Position:

The incumbent performs duties encompassing all phases of the industrial hygiene program. Full-time position, typically Monday through Friday, 7:30am to 4:00pm. Some flexibility may be required for special assessments, emergency responses, or training sessions.

Basic Requirement for Industrial Hygienist:

A. Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Degree must be completed by May 2018. (

OR

B. Related Degree: Bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum. Degree must be completed by May 2018. (

OR

C. Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized

Experience:

One year of specialized experience which includes experience conducting a wide variety of complex industrial hygiene surveys and assessments of chemical, physical, and biological hazards; preparing comprehensive written reports of survey findings with specification recommendations for eliminating/mitigating hazards; and providing resolution to problems relating to safety, health and environmental controls and the various industrial hygiene programs. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performs at the next lower grade level in the federal service (GS-11).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education or the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
