Summary
Positions in this class are assigned to the local school to assist the administration in maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for the school community. Under the general supervision of the security team leader, the incumbent assists in screening visitor access to school facilities, maintaining student class attendance, and performing other responsibilities related to school security operations. Guidance and assistance is provided by the security team leader for more difficult or unusual situations.
PhysicalDemands
Sufficient physical strength to intervene in fights and physically restrain persons; stamina to spend long periods of time walking and standing and to complete security patrol duties. Ability to patrol outdoors in inclement and extreme weather conditions.
Special RequirementsRequired to work flexible hours, including weekends, as assigned by the principal or security team leader to provide maximum security coverage. Required to occasionally work overtime. Required to wear designated security uniforms.

Only candidates who completed the screening interview for this position with the Dept. School Safety & Security will be considered. Preference to bilingual English/Spanish candidates with working knowledge of safety procedures and practices; knowledge of behavior management techniques; investigative procedures;
excellent written and oral communication skills.

- Knowledge of procedures and practices for ensuring the safety and welfare of others.
- Knowledge of behavior management techniques.
- Knowledge of security practices and procedures.
- Investigative procedures knowledge desirable.
- Ability to quickly acquire specific knowledge of school and MCPS policies and procedures on student attendance, suspension, student involvement, and standards of student behavior.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and staff, and to understand the role of each staff member in student attendance, behavior, and building security.
- Ability to work harmoniously with staff and students and to perform assigned tasks under team leader supervision.
- Excellent oral and written communications and human relations skills.
- Knowledge of and ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
- High School or GED diploma required. Associate’s degree preferred.
- College coursework in criminology, law enforcement, or related fields.
- Experience in work involving the welfare and safety of students or others, preferably in an educational environment.
- Experience in investigation desirable.
- Experience in safety and security of persons and property, preferably as a police officer.
- Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience may be considered.
- Certificate/License:
Possession of a valid Maryland class C noncommercial driver’s license, or equivalent. First aid and CPR certification.
