Security Assistant – Thomas W. Pyle MS
Summary description: Positions in this class are primarily assigned to the local school to assist the administration in maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for the school community. Under the general supervision of the security team leader, the assistant screens visitor access to school facilities, maintains student class attendance, and performs other responsibilities related to school security operations. Guidance is given by the security team leader or cluster security coordinator for more difficult situations.
Security assistants may be assigned under the direct supervision of the Department of Systemwide Safety and Emergency Management to assist cluster security coordinators in providing school-based security/safety services and emergency preparedness readiness.
Physical demands: Adequate strength to intervene in fights and physically restrain persons; stamina for long periods of walking and standing to complete patrol duties. Ability to patrol outdoors in inclement and extreme weather conditions.
Special requirements: Work flexible hours, including weekends, as assigned by the principal, security team leader, or cluster security coordinator. Occasionally work overtime. Wear the designated security uniforms. Use of own transportation may be required to travel to multiple locations (mileage reimbursement in accordance with MCPS practices/processes).
Knowledge, skills & abilities:
- Procedures and practices for ensuring safety and welfare of others.
- Behavior management techniques.
- Security practices and procedures.
- Investigative procedures knowledge desirable.
- Rapid acquisition of specific knowledge of school and MCPS policies on student attendance, suspension, involvement, and standards of behavior.
- Effective communication with students and staff; understanding role of each staff member regarding attendance, behavior, and building security.
- Work harmoniously with staff and students and perform tasks under team leader supervision.
- Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
- Ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
Education, training & experience:
- High School or GED diploma required;
Associate’s degree preferred. - College coursework in criminology, law enforcement, or related fields.
- Experience in work involving the welfare and safety of students or others, preferably in an educational environment.
- Experience in investigation desirable.
- Experience in safety and security of persons and property, preferably as a police officer.
Certifications & licenses:
- Valid Maryland Class C noncommercial driver’s license, or equivalent.
- First aid and CPR certification.
Hiring information: Wage range: $24.45–$34.82 per hour, based on years of service. Benefits information:
Schedule: Full-time | 1.000 (80 hours bi-weekly);
