Summary DescriptionPrimary duties include assisting the school administration in maintaining a safe and secure learning environment. Under the general supervision of the security team leader, the assistant screens visitor access, monitors student attendance, and performs other security‑related tasks. Guidance is provided by the team leader or cluster security coordinator for more difficult situations. In some cases, the assistant may report to the Department of Systemwide Safety and Emergency Management to support cluster security coordinators in school‑based security and emergency preparedness.

Special Requirements
Physical strength to intervene in fights and restrain individuals; stamina to walk or stand for long periods and complete patrol duties. Ability to patrol outdoors in inclement and extreme weather conditions. Required to work flexible hours, including weekends, as assigned, and occasionally overtime. Must wear designated security uniforms and may need personal transportation to reach multiple locations; mileage reimbursement provided per MCPS policies.
Knowledge,Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of safety and welfare procedures
- Knowledge of behavior management techniques
- Proficiency in security practices and procedures; investigative knowledge desirable
- Immediate understanding of MCPS policies on student attendance, suspension, and behavior
- Effective oral and written communication; strong human relations skills
- Ability to work harmoniously with staff and students under supervision
- Understanding of the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS)
- High School or GED diploma required;
Associate degree preferred, with coursework in criminology, law enforcement, or related fields - Experience in safeguarding students or others, preferably in an educational setting; investigative experience desirable
- Experience as a police officer or in security of persons and property appreciated
- Valid Maryland Class C non‑commercial driver’s license or equivalent;
First Aid and CPR certification required - Other combinations of education, training, and experience as deemed suitable
