Military Family Life Counselor

Overview

This position is responsible for delivering comprehensive Child and Youth Behavioral (CYB) counseling services to children of all ages who belong to military service members and their families at military installations, including civilian expeditionary workforce and families when activated.

• Provide non‑medical, short‑term, solution‑focused counseling directly to eligible children and youth at assigned primary and secondary locations.
• Conduct assessments, brief counseling, action planning, referrals, and follow‑up, ensuring timely linkage to appropriate resources.
• Deliver trainings and health‑and‑wellness presentations; participate in health fairs and other installation activities focused on children and youth.
• Document all counseling activity daily using smartphone or web applications to maintain accurate reporting and confidentiality.
• Establish and maintain working relationships with community resources and provide linkages for additional support.
• Maintain visibility within assigned locations to ensure services are accessible; adhere to line‑of‑sight protocol when working with children.
• Partner with Points of Contact (POC) to adapt CYB services to installation needs and manage duty‑to‑warn and restricted‑reporting situations per DoD protocol.
• Communicate with Regional Supervisors; participate in regular supervision, sharing information on trends and issues.
• Respond to critical incidents and special requests as directed by the POC and approved by the Office of Secretary of Defense (OSD) program manager.
• Flex schedule to address urgent requests as needed or upon direction of the Regional Supervisor/Director.
• Participate in in‑services, training, quality‑improvement committees, and pilot‑program activities assigned by the customer or Magellan.
• Complete all required activity documentation and integrate pilot activities into non‑medical counseling work.
• Perform any additional duties as assigned.

• Master’s degree from an accredited graduate program in a mental health‑related field.
• Valid unrestricted independent counseling license from a State, District of Columbia, U.S. Territory, or Commonwealth that authorizes independent practice.
• A minimum of two years of post‑license clinical experience.
• Demonstrated intermediate‑level competency in technology and software (e.g., Microsoft Suite, internet navigation, smartphone/tablet application navigation, video‑conferencing platforms).
• Ability to engage and communicate with military members and children quickly in emergent situations on installations or in school settings.
• Willingness to traverse short and long distances within bases, navigate indoor/outdoor and rugged areas, and work in outdoor weather and other military base conditions.
• Compliance with site‑specific requirements (e.g., required immunizations, safety documentation).
• Proof of U.S. citizenship and fluency in English.
• Understanding, sensitivity, and empathy for children, service members, and families; ability to develop trusting, helping relationships.
• Effectiveness with diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
• Pass a CNACI clearance, Installation Records Check, criminal history background check, and FBI fingerprint check.
• Valid U.S. state vehicle operator’s license (or equivalent military vehicle operator’s permit if required at TDY locations).
• Meet Magellan MFLC CYB criteria for experience with children and youth, specializing in child and adolescent development/psychology.
• For school‑assigned positions, prior experience in a school setting is required.

Salary Minimum: $59,922;
