The Civil Engineer Trainee position with the Department of Transportation gives you the chance to grow your skills while contributing to important transportation projects. This role offers hands‑on work in several areas of civil engineering through a structured 12‑month training program. You will join a supportive team that is committed to helping you learn and succeed. It is an exciting opportunity to begin your engineering career with PennDOT.
Responsibilities- Field Support: Assist with gathering data, performing traffic studies, and helping with construction inspections.
- Engineering Studies: Contribute to basic engineering reviews and prepare materials for highway and bridge design.

Gain experience using standard engineering tools needed for technical work. - Rotational Learning: Take part in assignments across design, construction, and maintenance divisions.
- Professional Growth: Develop your knowledge by working with staff across several engineering disciplines.
- Full‑time employment.
- Work hours are 7:00 am to 3:00 pm, Monday – Friday, with a 30‑minute lunch.
- Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
- Salary: Most selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $67,658.00 (before taxes).
- One year of civil engineering experience and a valid Engineer‑in‑Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists;
or - A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related field that includes or is supplemented by major coursework in civil engineering.
- Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within ten months of graduating with a qualifying degree.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license which is not under suspension.
- PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
- You must be able to perform essential job functions.
