The Compliance Officer ensures the facility adheres to all federal, state, and local regulations governing memory care, behavioral health, assisted living, and long-term care services. This role leads compliance initiatives, investigates concerns, monitors quality standards, and ensures that residents with dementia or behavioral conditions receive safe, ethical, and legally compliant care. The Compliance Officer partners with leadership to maintain a culture of integrity, transparency, and regulatory excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Regulatory Oversight & Compliance Management
- Monitor and interpret regulations related to memory care, dementia services, behavioral health, assisted living, and long-term care.
- Maintain ongoing compliance with state licensing standards, CMS guidelines (if applicable), mental/behavioral health regulations, and life-safety codes.
- Develop, implement, and update policies and procedures that meet regulatory and accreditation requirements.
- Conduct routine compliance audits, mock surveys, chart reviews, and environmental safety checks.
- Ensure proper incident reporting, root-cause analysis, and follow-up documentation for behavioral events or safety concerns.
- Lead or participate in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) programs.
- Track and analyze trends in behaviors, adverse events, staff compliance, medication errors, and regulatory findings.
- Assist department leaders in developing and implementing corrective action plans.
- Ensure staff documentation is accurate, complete, and compliant with regulations and standards of care.
- Ensure compliance programs support dementia-specific best practices and behavioral-health safety protocols.
- Monitor adherence to care standards such as trauma-informed practices, de-escalation procedures, and safe interventions.
- Review behavioral documentation, care plans, and psychotropic medication processes to ensure regulatory accuracy.
- Oversight of specialized training requirements related to dementia care, wandering prevention, and behavior-management safeguards.
- Develop and deliver compliance training to all staff, including memory-care-specific requirements.
- Ensure staff receive required annual competencies and specialty training (e.g., dementia communication, behavioral escalation prevention).
- Provide ongoing coaching, policy clarification, and education during departmental meetings or audits.
- Conduct investigations related to incidents, grievances, allegations of abuse/neglect, or regulatory concerns.
- Collaborate with leadership to reduce risk exposure and improve resident safety.
- Oversee documentation for investigations and maintain confidential compliance records.
- Assist in emergency preparedness planning, drills, and safety standards.
- Serve as liaison with state surveyors, regulatory agencies, and external auditors.
- Collaborate with Nursing, Operations, Memory Care leadership, and Behavioral Health teams to ensure cross-department compliance.
- Communicate findings, trends, and improvement plans to leadership teams and governing bodies.
- Bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration, Nursing, Social Work, or related field preferred.
- Experience in memory care, assisted living, behavioral health, or long-term care required or strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of dementia care standards, behavioral health regulations, safety requirements, and documentation best practices.
- Experience with compliance oversight, investigations, and survey preparedness.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication, documentation, and training abilities.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, professionalism, and ethical judgement at all times.
- Familiarity with EMR systems, incident-tracking software, and compliance reporting tools.
