The CAC is a nonprofit community based arts organization in Wallingford, PA founded in 1948. The organization is located in a historic property just off the Media Swarthmore exit of the 476 highway. CAC offers a wide variety of classes in the visual arts, with ceramics being the largest program. Additionally, the organization hosts a large summer camp, exhibitions in expansive galleries, live music, and other special events.

QUALIFICATIONS:

We are seeking a qualified manager with significant experience working in and/or managing a busy ceramics studio, with knowledge of glaze mixing, kiln firing, and equipment maintenance. Prior management experience is prefferred. This position is well suited to ceramic teaching artists who also wish to teach in the studio.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

CERAMICS STUDIO MANAGER

The Ceramic Studio Manager reports to the Program Director and is responsible for the operations in the Beatrice S. Dallett Ceramic Studio. This is a part time salaried position (approximately 30 hours per week).

The Ceramic Studio Manager is responsible for:

  • Assisting the Program Director to schedule classes in the Ceramic Studio and identify potential faculty members.
  • Supervising kiln techs, including assigning tasks, scheduling, monitoring progress, and providing feedback to address issues.
  • Overseeing the operations of outdoor kilns (wood, soda, raku, gas), in coordination with faculty/kiln techs assigned to each one to ensure the safe, timely, and efficient firing of student work. Each of these kilns is typically managed directly by one or more individuals in an ongoing way who is identified by and in communication with the Studio Manager.
  • Purchasing supplies for the ceramic program within budget limits.
  • Maintaining ceramic studio equipment including, but not limited to, kilns, wheels and other mechanical systems. The Ceramic Studio Manager is responsible for keeping both the Program Director and the Executive Director aware of needed repairs in the studio, getting estimates for those repairs, approval from the ED for the repairs and scheduling necessary repairs. (Support is provided by the Caretaker when necessary.)
  • Coordinating and scheduling firings of all electric kilns, including loading and unloading kilns as necessary depending on kiln tech hours.
  • Interfacing with faculty and other members of CAC Ceramics community regarding the firing and maintenance of the gas, raku and soda kilns.
  • Coordinating the mixing of glazes and insuring proper safety labeling of glazes.
  • Scheduling Open Studio Hour. Coordinating plan for locking studio at the end of day.
  • Coordinating the cleaning of the Ceramic Studio and insuring that standards for cleanliness are upheld by students and faculty. This includes oversight of the annual summer studio cleanup as well as assigning certain cleaning tasks to the kiln techs and interfacing with the studio cleaner. (The CAC studio cleaner cleans the studio floors twice per week)
  • Coordinating and running the Emerging Artist Ceramics Sale.
  • Coordinating schedule of any special programs, volunteer cleanings, and/or tech work during break weeks and arts center closings.
  • Other tasks or jobs relating to the operations of the CAC Ceramics Studio.

No specific educational degree is required. At least a Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience is desired.
