A Brief OverviewCHOP is hiring for a full‑time experienced Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to work on our Inpatient Flex Team at Main Hospital. In collaboration with an attending physician, the Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant are responsible for the direct care and follow‑up of at least two populations of patients that matches their delineation of privileges and skill set. This role requires at least one year of APP experience in the inpatient hospital setting.
The Flex APP will be oriented and credentialed to at least two, but no more than four, different inpatient units and provide direct care and follow up to those patients. These inpatient units will include the PICU, CICU, Surgical NICU, and Medical NICU. This care is delivered in defined inpatient and hospital‑outpatient areas. The components of the role include clinical practice, consultation, professional development, education, and research.
The clinical portion of this role will require a higher level of accountability including managing a cohort of high acuity patients and may be required to utilize invasive interventions and procedures to promote physiologic stability as per their delineation of privileges. The role also includes off‑shift responsibilities which may include days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays and will be determined by the clinical needs of the practice environment.
Candidate
- At least 1 year of experience practicing as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner
- At least 1–2 years of experience working in an ICU clinical setting (preferred)
- Assess the complex acute, critical and chronically ill patient for urgent and emergent conditions. Uses relevant data to evaluate for physiologic instability. Utilizes the data to formulate a plan of care.
- Perform therapeutic interventions to stabilize acute and critical health problems, as outlined in the Scope of Practice Document and approved as a part of the credentialing/privileging process.
- Analyze the indications, contraindications, risk of complications and cost‑benefits of therapeutic interventions.
- Manage the plan of care through evaluation, modification and documentation according to the patient’s response to therapy. Manage changes in condition with a focus on optimizing patient outcomes.
- Incorporate health promotion, health protection and injury prevention measures into the plan of care within the context of the complex acute, critical and chronic illness.
- Facilitate the patient’s transitions between and within health care settings.
- Serve as an educational resource to the patient/family, nursing staff, and provider team. Act as a consultant to multidisciplinary health care team members.
- Participate in scholarly activities including research and education. Pursue own professional development by maintaining required competencies, identifying learning needs and seeking appropriate educational offerings. Mentor and support the development of nurses, nurse practitioners, students, and other health care providers.
- Demonstrate a commitment to patient safety by speaking up about safety issues and changing practice to enhance safety. Share errors or potential errors through system reporting mechanisms. Demonstrate shared accountability for safe practice.
