Cutting, preparing, merchandising, and selling meat products while delivering excellent customer service and ensuring compliance with store protocols and health and safety regulations. The role supports the team in all areas of the department and may include training apprentice staff.
Responsibilities- Cuts, plates, and merchandises products (beef, pork, lamb, veal, poultry).
- Prepares specialty meats such as sausage, oven‑ready products, and cured meats.
- Checks product to ensure it meets Whole Foods quality standards.
- Maintains sampling program.
- Monitors and assists in preventing spoilage.
- Mentors and supports assigned meat‑cutter trainees.
- Arrives to work station on time, appropriately groomed and ready to work; attends schedules and required trainings.
- Provides excellent customer service and proactive suggestive selling; answers phones and pages promptly and courteously.
- Maximizes sales potential through proper prep, storage, rotating, stocking, and merchandising procedures.
- Follows and ensures compliance with procedures, including weights & measures, health and sanitation, and safe work practices.
- Maintains a clean and sanitary environment and equipment according to Store standards.
- Performs opening, mid‑day, and closing duties; ensures accuracy of signs and pricing.
- Immediately reports safety hazards and violations.
- Performs other duties assigned by store, regional, or national leadership.
- 14+ months retail experience.
- Successfully completed WFM Butcher Apprentice Program or equivalent training.
- Working understanding of meat team processes and procedures.
- Excellent cutting skills; ability to break down products into sub‑primal and retail cuts.
- Extensive knowledge of meat cuts and cooking techniques.
- Ability to visually examine products for quality and freshness.
- Strong communication skills; able to work as part of a team.
- Customer service skills meeting expectations in all interactions.
- Ability to follow directions and procedures; effective time management and organization.
- Passion for natural foods and the mission of Whole Foods Market.
- Strong work ethic; able to work in a fast‑paced environment with urgency.
- Understanding and compliance with WFM quality goals.
- Must lift 50 pounds.
- Standing or walking 6–8 hours in an 8‑hour shift.
- Hand use: single grasping, fine manipulation, pushing and pulling.
- Requires bending, twisting, squatting and reaching.
- Exposure to FDA approved cleaning chemicals.
- Exposure to temperatures below 32°F, 32–40°F, and above 90°F.
- Work in a wet and cold environment.
- Handle knives and other cutting equipment.
- Work flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Use tools and equipment such as box cutters, electric pallet jacks, heavy machinery.
Wage range $17.50–$30.20 hourly, commensurate with experience. Whole Foods offers a benefits package for full and part‑time team members including store discount, paid time off, and wellness programs. Eligibility determined under applicable plan at hire.
