THE POSITION
As a Corrections Refrigeration Mechanic Trade Instructor with the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Laurel Highlands, you play an important role in shaping vocational training. This position allows you to teach trade skills that support rehabilitation and long‑term success. Your guidance helps inmates develop work habits, technical abilities, and confidence. DESCRIPTIONOF WORK
This position provides structured classroom and on‑the‑job training in the refrigeration mechanic trade to support rehabilitation and facility operations. The role includes teaching trade practices, directing inmate work crews, and maintaining training and tool documentation.
- Trade Instruction:
Teach refrigeration and air conditioning installation, repair, inspection, and maintenance to inmates. - Classroom Training:
Deliver curriculum, maintain order, and track attendance and progress during instruction. - Work Crew Oversight:
Direct inmate crews in completing refrigeration work orders and inspect completed tasks. - Tool Management:
Issue, inventory, and verify all tools and materials used during training and work assignments. - Resource Planning:
Determine needed materials and submit purchase requests to support training and work projects.
- Full‑time employment, 40 hours per week.
- Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday – Friday.
- Position eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
- Telework: not available.
- Salary: starting annual salary of $51,868.00 (before taxes) for new employees.
Required Experience, Training & Eligibility
- Five years of experience in the repair and servicing of refrigeration systems or air conditioning systems; or
- Completion of an approved apprenticeship in the refrigeration or air conditioning mechanic trade; or
- An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes one year of journey‑level work in the refrigeration or air conditioning mechanic trade.
Special Requirement
- Possession of an active Universal Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Certificate issued by an approved provider.
Other Requirements
- Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA.
- Must meet PA residency requirement.
- Must be able to perform essential job functions.

- Must pass a background investigation and meet CJIS compliance requirements.
