THE POSITION

As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic with the Department of Transportation, you will help keep essential vehicles and machinery running safely across Indiana County. This job provides stable hours and the opportunity to diagnose, repair, and maintain many types of equipment. You will apply your knowledge of engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems to solve problems and support daily maintenance operations.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position focuses on maintaining and repairing diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles and equipment to support safe and efficient maintenance operations. It ensures equipment stays in proper working condition through inspections, diagnostics, and hands-on repairs. As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic, you will perform the following duties:

  • Vehicle Repair:
    Repair and overhaul trucks, cars, and construction equipment including transmissions, brakes, and electrical systems
  • Preventative Maintenance:
    Perform diagnostics, tune ups, and servicing on engines, cooling systems and fuel systems
  • State Inspections:
    Complete official safety and emissions inspections and prepare required records
  • Diagnostic Work:
    Use tools and equipment to identify mechanical problems and determine proper repair methods
  • Safety Awareness:
    Maintain a clean work area, report injuries or accidents and follow safety procedures
  • Environmental Compliance:
    Follow environmental guidelines and attend required environmental training

Work Schedule and Additional Information
  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Travel, overtime, and shift work required. Work hours subject to change based on seasonal requirements and operational needs.
  • Telework:
    You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary:

    Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $56,607 (before taxes).

QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the commonwealth’s Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires possession of an active Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License on the first day of employment.
  • This position requires employees to possess an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations on the first day of employment.
  • This position requires an active Pennsylvania Class 1, Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.
  • This position requires employees to pass the Department of Transportation’s New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.
  • This position requires possession of an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) on the first day of employment.
