Equipment Operator B - Clarks Summit State Hospital

Become an Equipment Operator B with the Department of Human Services (DHS) and help keep the Clarks Summit State Hospital running smoothly each day. This role gives you the chance to work with a wide range of equipment while supporting important facility operations. Your efforts help maintain well‑kept grounds, clear roadways, and dependable transportation services for residents, staff, and visitors. This position supports hospital operations by operating medium weight vehicles and equipment on and off hospital grounds. As an Equipment Operator B, you will perform the following duties:

• Vehicle Operation: Operate light and medium weight vehicles to support transportation, deliveries, and material movement
• Heavy Equipment Use: Use tractors, loaders, and related equipment for digging, excavating, repairs, and landscaping work
• Patient Transport: Provide on‑ground and off‑ground escort services using vans and buses as assigned
• Maintenance Support: Perform routine maintenance, minor repairs, inspections, and record keeping for assigned equipment
• Snow Removal: Carry out snow and ice removal using light and heavy equipment during winter operations
• Grounds Care: Maintain hospital grounds by mowing, trimming, planting, and restoring outdoor areas

• Full‑time employment, 37.5 hours per week
• Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday – Friday, with a 30‑minute lunch. You will work a rotating weekend and holiday schedule with a 12‑hour shift every 5th or 6th weekend. Your schedule may change based on operational needs.
• Overtime and travel as needed
• Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
• Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non‑negotiable.

• One year of experience as an Equipment Operator A (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration) or
• Two years of experience in the operation of heavy construction and specialized maintenance equipment used at this level with a gross vehicle weight of 32,001 pounds or more; or
• Any equivalent combination of experience and training.

• You must be in possession of a valid Class C Pennsylvania driver’s license.

• You must be in possession of a Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) with air brake and passenger endorsement as required to operate specific equipment, in order to meet operational needs.

• You must be able to perform essential job functions.

• A conditional offer of employment will require a medical examination.
• This position falls under the provisions of the Older Adult Protective Services Act.
• Under the Act, a conditional offer of employment will require submission and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports, including but not limited to, PA State Police and FBI clearance.
