The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is offering opportunities for CDL Operators, Mechanics, Clerical Dispatchers, Semi‑Skilled Laborers, and Tradesman Helpers in the Seasonal Winter Maintenance Program for the 2026–2027 season (September–April). Winter CDL Equipment Operator ($23.46)Performs a wide range of winter roadway tasks, including clearing snow, directing traffic in active work zones, supporting equipment maintenance and minor repairs, assisting with guide rail upkeep, and unloading materials needed for safe winter operations.
- To be eligible, you must have: Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee Program employed by the Commonwealth of PA, or graduation from a Commercial Driver's License Training School, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
- Special Requirements: All positions require possession of an active PA Class A or B CDL or equivalent with the Air Brake (L) Restriction removed; all positions require a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate; all employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders within the probationary period; certain positions may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment;
certain positions require operation of vehicles or equipment with a manual transmission; all positions are subject to Drug and Alcohol testing.
Dispatches equipment operators during winter events to support safe and efficient operations. Handles a variety of clerical duties that keep communication, documentation, and workflow running smoothly.
- To be eligible, you must have: Previous clerical or radio dispatching experience, including the utilization of electronic communications equipment and visual display equipment is preferred, but not required.
Performs maintenance and repair on PennDOT equipment and diesel‑powered vehicles, including heavy trucks over 26,001 pounds, graders, backhoes, front end loaders, and similar machinery. Completes routine inspections, services components, and repairs parts to ensure all fleet vehicles and equipment operate safely and efficiently in accordance with department standards.
- To be eligible, you must have: Successful completion of the Commonwealth’s Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program, or two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment including one year of experience with diesel vehicles or equipment, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
- Special Requirements: All positions require a possession of a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License; all positions require a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate; all employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders within the probationary period; certain positions may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment;
