Overview
Purpose – The Beverly Cultural District seeks submissions from artists to install a mural or multi‑dimensional piece of art at the Red Fence Gallery. The goals of the Red Fence Gallery are to showcase artists in a high‑traffic area, to add to the public art scene in Beverly and to entertain visitors to downtown Beverly. The Gallery was launched in 2016 and has had over a dozen installations to date, most of which were paintings done directly on the fence and one of which was created offsite, framed and hung on the fence.
(See examples below.)
Vision – The installation will add interest and vibrancy to the Cultural District and highlight the creative assets of downtown Beverly. Ideally the design concept will incorporate or leave bare details of the fence (color, shape, etc) so that the identity of the fence as canvas is preserved (examples below). The artwork will be marketed as a temporary installation and there may be a ribbon cutting and/or opening reception.
Award – The selected artist will be awarded a stipend of $1,000 to fully fund the work. This will include artist fees, travel and accommodation (if applicable), site preparation, permit fees (if applicable), project supplies, and artwork installation. The stipend will be awarded in two amounts, the first of which will be $500 awarded upon signing of the artist agreement, and the second of which will be $500 awarded upon the completion of the installation.
This award is structured to support the full project lifecycle, from concept development through installation.
Project Details – The Gallery is located outdoors on a piece of red fence between Atomic Café (268 Cabot Street) and the Lindsey Building (266 Cabot Street). The fence is approximately 5’ x 4’ and we encourage you to visit it before you submit your application. The selected artist must agree to install the same design they submit for consideration. The artist is responsible for any damage to the fence and/or sidewalk in front of the fence.
All materials must be able to withstand normal wear and tear and predictable weather conditions.
Applicants must complete the online application by March 2, 2026 and attach all required design files in high resolution. All required materials must be submitted in full and in a clear, readable format. Incomplete or unreadable applications will not be considered.
