Position Summary

Northshore Academy Upper School is seeking a creative, engaging Middle School Science Teacher who is genuinely excited about science and eager to spark curiosity in students. This is an opportunity to make science active, relevant, and accessible while teaching middle school students in a therapeutic school setting. The ideal candidate pairs strong science instruction with patience, flexibility, and the ability to connect with students experiencing social, emotional, or behavioral challenges.

The successful candidate will create a safe, structured classroom and collaborate closely with multidisciplinary staff to support academic and social‑emotional growth.

Responsibilities
  • Plan and deliver engaging, inquiry-based Science instruction that encourages curiosity, problem solving, and hands‑on learning.
  • Create a safe, structured, predictable, and positive classroom environment where students feel respected and ready to learn.
  • Differentiate instruction and assessment to meet a range of academic, social, and emotional learning needs.
  • Use relationship‑based and therapeutic classroom practices to support engagement, regulation, and successful participation during challenging moments.
  • Monitor progress, maintain accurate grades and documentation, and participate in IEP meetings and progress reporting.
  • Collaborate closely with teachers, clinicians, related service providers, families, and the multidisciplinary team.
  • Supervise students and fulfill professional teaching responsibilities with consistency, sound judgment, and a student‑centered approach.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and contribute to a collaborative school community.
Qualifications
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for Science and the ability to make content engaging, relevant, and accessible to diverse learners.
  • Strong classroom management skills, including the ability to remain calm, flexible, and consistent when students experience dysregulation or behavioral challenges.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, with a strong commitment to collaboration and problem solving.
  • Ability to build trusting relationships with students and staff; experience with students with social, emotional, and behavioral health needs is preferred.
Education & Licensure

Candidates must possess:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field.
  • A Massachusetts DESE license in Moderate Disabilities or Science Education (or another closely related licensure area appropriate for the position).
  • Experience teaching students with social/emotional disabilities is preferred.
Working Conditions
