Manufacturing Engineer

The Manufacturing Engineer will own the health and performance of complex electromechanical production lines, troubleshooting hardware issues on the factory floor and driving permanent corrective actions that improve product quality, repeatability, and manufacturability. This role bridges design and production by translating engineering intent into clear work instructions, leading structured root-cause investigations, and ensuring that lessons learned in the factory and the field result in lasting design and process improvements.

The position is ideal for an engineer who enjoys hands-on work with complex machinery, thrives in low-volume, high-complexity environments, and can move seamlessly between the shop floor and technical discussions with cross-functional stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical and electrical hardware issues that arise during assembly, integration, and final test, diagnosing problems directly on the production floor and implementing robust fixes that remain effective across future builds.
  • Lead root-cause investigations using structured problem-solving methods such as DFMEA, Fishbone diagrams, and 8D, and implement permanent corrective actions that prevent recurrence in future builds and at customer sites.
  • Develop, maintain, and continuously improve assembly instructions, work instructions, and technician training materials so that technicians can follow them accurately the first time, updating documentation as engineering changes and lessons learned occur.
  • Execute engineering changes, deviations, and rework directives in production, assessing their impact on active builds and coordinating implementation with planning and shop floor teams to minimize disruption to schedules.
  • Contribute to manufacturing readiness reviews, design reviews, and tool risk assessments, providing a strong production perspective to engineering decisions before designs reach the factory floor.
  • Partner closely with Design Engineering, Quality, Field Service, and Supply Chain to close the loop on factory and field issues, ensuring that problems discovered during build or at customer sites result in permanent design or process changes rather than repeated workarounds.
  • Drive continuous improvement in manufacturability, build repeatability, and product quality by identifying patterns across builds that indicate opportunities for cost reduction, cycle time improvement, or defect elimination, then implementing and measuring the impact of changes.
  • Sustain production lines for complex electromechanical systems, including assembly, integration, and test of equipment involving vacuum environments, gas delivery, thermal management, motion systems, and contamination-controlled hardware.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, electrical schematics, 3D models, bills of materials (BOMs), and technical documentation, including GD&T, to identify discrepancies and communicate issues clearly and specifically to Design Engineering.
  • Support suppliers and contract manufacturing partners on hardware quality and production issues, including conducting supplier corrective action processes when necessary.
  • Use enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, such as SAP, to process engineering changes, manage deviations, and track material and production data.
  • Create clear process documentation, including Sequence of Operations, Method Instructions, and training materials, to improve build consistency and reduce reliance on undocumented tribal knowledge.
  • Work hands-on with technicians on the production line and during test, engaging directly with manufacturing equipment, vacuum pumps, valves, motors, cryopumps, and semiconductor-related equipment to resolve issues and optimize processes.
  • Present root-cause findings, improvement proposals, and production status updates to plant leadership and cross-functional stakeholders in a clear, data-driven manner.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in manufacturing engineering, sustaining engineering, or hardware support engineering, preferably in low-volume, high-complexity, or engineer-to-order environments.
  • Proven experience sustaining production lines for complex electromechanical systems and products, ideally complex machines with integrated electromechanical equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex electromechanical hardware directly on a production floor, going beyond desk-based analysis to hands-on problem resolution.
  • Strong capability to read and interpret engineering drawings, electrical schematics, 3D models, bills of materials (BOMs), and technical documentation.
  • Proficiency with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to understand design intent and evaluate part conformance.
  • Demonstrated expertise in structured problem-solving for root-cause analysis, including practical use of DFMEA, 8D, Fishbone analysis, or equivalent methodologies.
