Summary:

Responsible for the enforcement of all state and local laws and regulations related to animal control and animal inspections, and oversees the care and control of domestic animals and wildlife in the City of Beverly.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Include the following; other duties may be assigned.

• Enforcement of M.G.L. c. 140, §§ 136A-174G, and Chapter 117 of the City of Beverly Ordinances.
• Serve as Animal Inspector responsible for the enforcement of M.G.L. c. 129.
• Perform the essential function associated with state mandated rabies control pursuant to 330 C.M.R. 10.00.
• Patrol the roads, ways, schools, parks, and beaches of the City of Beverly to locate stray dogs, cats, and other domestic animals.
• Return stray dogs, cats, or other domestic animals to their owners (if known) or impound the animal until the owner claims it.
• Issue appropriate citations and fines for violations of state and local laws and regulations related to the care and control of animals.
• Prepare and file complaints with the District Court for unpaid citations; appear for all necessary court hearings related to animal control.
• Investigate complaints from the public regarding dog bites, dangerous or nuisance dogs, loose domestic animals, cruelty or neglect of animals, and respond to each complaint according to the merit of the situations.
• Respond to reports of injured domestic animal reports, transport the animal to the appropriate veterinary facility, and locate the owner of the injured animal when possible, sometimes on a 24-hour emergency basis when possible.
• Respond to reports of injured wild animals and transport sick or injured wildlife to the appropriate wildlife facility, sometimes on a 24-hour emergency basis when possible.
• Respond to reports of domestic or wild animals in distress/trapped in unusual places and, when possible, rescue the animal and return it to the owner or releasing it back to the wild, or transporting the animal for further care, sometimes on a 24-hour emergency basis when possible.
• Safely engage and handle live or deceased animals and provide first aid to injured animals.
