Description
The Area Coordinator (AC) serves as a student-facing member of the Division of Student Affairs at the University of New England (UNE), supporting the institution's Mission, Vision, Values, and Strategic Priorities. As part of the department of Housing and Residential/Commuter Life, the AC is a full-time, 12-month live-in professional position, supervised by the Director of Housing and Residential/Commuter Life, with direct accountability to the Associate Director.
The AC is responsible for fostering student development by building supportive, inclusive, and safe communities in residence halls. This involves high-touch interaction with students, overseeing residence hall facilities, and supervising a student staff team. The role requires flexibility beyond standard office hours, including nights and weekends.

Responsibilities
- Participate in the creation and implementation of the Housing department and division vision, mission and goals.
- Commit to and genuinely work toward building a cohesive department team.
- Dedicate to a student-centered approach, demonstrate initiative in reaching out and building relationships.
- Collaboratively develop, design and communicate department procedures manuals, protocols and similar documentation to ensure continuity.
- Review, refine and implement the department's Community Development Model with both student development theory and learning outcomes in mind.
- Advise Resident Advisors as to the creation and support of floor communities.
- Provide developmental conversations and support for personal, emotional, social, academic, career and health related needs of individual students.
- Serve as a resource for students, parents and the UNE community.
- Informally investigate, assess and determine appropriate methods of resolving various interpersonal and community problems in the halls such as conflicts between roommates or floor mates, vandalism, etc.
- Work with the Director of Student Resolutions to interpret and enforce University and residence life policies and procedures governing student behavior.
- Select, train, supervise and mentor Resident Advisors (RA's).
- Brainstorm and assume responsibility for summer project work on behalf of the department.
- Supervise summer RA staff as assigned.
- Participate in Summer Orientation by presenting sessions, providing tours, and supporting activities.
- Provide support to commuter students including but not limited to:
- Supervision and coordination a variety of special programs and events for commuters.
- Plan and implement educational programs to support commuter life that provide focus on the developmental needs of this population
- Hire and supervisor upper class students to serve as Commuter Life Mentors.
- Participate in daily duty coverage on a rotational basis with the other AC's throughout the entire calendar year including holidays.
- In consultation with supervisors and in collaboration with other departments on and off campus, provide oversight for emergency situations (including physical, medical and psychiatric emergencies).
- Provide appropriate follow up for emergency situations to include reconnecting with students, making referrals, working with parents, and communicating with student development theory and learning outcomes in mind.
- Maintain regularly scheduled open office hours in area and main office coverage as needed particularly in the summer months and breaks.
- Collaborate with campus partners in the planning and implementation of campus wide events and activities as needed. Attendance at these events may be mandatory.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
