- Self-contained Functional Life Skills classroom instruction for students with moderate to severe disabilities.
- Under the general supervision of the School Principal, maximize the learning experience in academics, interpersonal skills and activities of daily living by implementing district-approved curriculum; document teaching and student progress/outcomes; address students specific needs; provide a safe and optimal learning environment.
- Participate in IEP development and PPT meetings; assist in implementing IEPs and behavior management plans.
- Coordinate with outside agencies, state and federal authorities as needed; coordinate with administrators and teachers to ascertain student abilities and needs; liaise with home and school to support student growth.
- Provide counseling and serve as a resource to students and parents to promote personal growth, self-understanding, and behavioral management.
- Maintain professional knowledge through seminars, workshops, or professional meetings; maintain relationships with higher education and business communities.
- Organize and maintain accurate records and provide student information to prospective colleges and employers as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
- Encourage parental involvement and ensure effective communication with students and parents.
- Assist in the orientation of new teachers and provide in-service training in guidance.
- Select and requisition appropriate books, aids, supplies, and equipment; maintain inventory records.
- Certification/License: State Certification as a Special Education Teacher. Maine DOE 286 or 282
- Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation
- Education: Bachelor's degree in an education discipline applicable to teaching assignment;
Master's Degree in Special Education preferred - Experience: Successful prior special education teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred; experience with students with moderate and severe disabilities; ABA and Positive Behavior Support training required; organizational skill with ability to lead a large team and collaborate with others
- FLSA Status:
Exempt
- Knowledge of Special Education principles, theories, testing, methods, etc., and proven methods to maximize learning for students with special needs
- Knowledge of differentiated instruction based on learning styles
- Knowledge of data systems, data analysis and action planning
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state education laws
- Proficiency with computer networks and software; ability to organize and coordinate work
- Effective communication with students and parents; ability to engage in self-evaluation and professional growth; ability to maintain cooperative relationships
- Conduct assessments, testing and diagnostic examinations to identify learning issues and recommend corrective actions to maximize learning
- Participate in PPTs and develop IEPs for students
- Assist in implementing IEPs and behavior plans
- Coordinate with outside agencies and authorities as needed
- Collaborate with administrators and staff to identify student needs and inform stakeholders about services
- Provide counseling to students and parents to promote growth and behavioral management; act as liaison between home and school
