Under the general supervision of the Building Principal, supports the social-emotional development, academic readiness, and well-being of young learners through individual and small-group counseling, classroom guidance lessons, and collaborative partnerships with families and staff.

Brief

Job Duties
  • Supports students' social-emotional development through individual, small-group, and classroom-based counseling aligned with the developmental needs of early childhood learners.
  • Delivers structured classroom guidance lessons and develops resource materials addressing topics such as self-regulation, empathy, conflict resolution, friendship skills, decision-making, and school readiness.
  • Facilitates smooth transitions for students between grade levels and schools.
  • Assists with the registration and orientation of students who are new to the school, helping families understand school procedures, expectations, and available support services.
  • Collaborates with teachers, administrators, and support staff to identify and address the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs of all students.
  • Develops and Case Manages 504 plans and participates in IEP Team meetings and serves as a liaison between special services staff, classroom teachers, administrators, and families.
  • Partners with families through regular communication to share resources, provide guidance on child development, and support the home-school connection.
  • Assists with the identification and referral of students who may benefit from additional support services, including special education evaluations, mental health services, or community resources.
  • Participates in student support team (SST/MTSS) meetings to help develop and monitor individualized plans for students requiring additional academic or behavioral interventions.
  • Works with building leadership to collect and apply student data to improve educational programming and inform decisions around scheduling and student placement.
  • Provides professional development and consultation to staff on topics such as trauma-informed practices, social-emotional learning, and strategies for supporting diverse learners.
  • Participates in monthly K–12 school counselor meetings to support the consistent implementation of counseling programming across the district.
  • Introduces age-appropriate awareness of careers, community roles, and personal development as foundational concepts in early childhood guidance programming.
  • Adheres to truancy protocols and communicates regularly with parents and guardians regarding attendance and student well-being.
  • Serves on building and district committees as designated by the building leader.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned by the building leader.
Certification/License

Maine State Certification as a Guidance Counselor (#075). Criminal History Record Check (CHRC), which includes Fingerprints on file with the Maine Department of Education

Education
  • Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
  • Masters Degree preferred.
Experience

Successful prior school counseling experience for the appropriate grade levels is preferred but not required.
