The Laboratory Coordinator II collaborates with faculty and professional staff in the School of Biological Sciences to prepare for and maintain teaching labs throughout the academic year and summer. Responsibilities include preparing and disposing of reagents and media, maintaining microbiological cultures, setting up and breaking down laboratory apparatus (including equipment and supplies) for weekly laboratory exercise, and cleaning, maintaining, and storing equipment and supplies.

The Laboratory Coordinator II may also teach laboratory sections during the Fall and Spring semesters as needed. The Coordinator will work with faculty and professional staff in purchasing equipment and supplies, monitor laboratories to ensure compliance with university and federal safety standards, and complete administrative tasks as assigned by the Academic Director of the School of Biological Sciences.

• Coordinate with Biology faculty and professional staff to prepare for Microbiology and Anatomy and Physiology laboratory courses, including pre- and between-lab set-up and post-lab break-down. This includes preparing microbiological media and reagents, setting up pH meters, balances, microscopes and other related equipment.
• Autoclave and/or properly dispose of biological waste generated in teaching laboratories.
• Teach laboratory courses as needed.
• Work with other school Laboratory Assistants and Coordinators to order equipment and supplies for teaching laboratories; receive and unpack orders; inventory, store, and organize supplies.
• Manage supply budgets for teaching labs and student salary budget.
• Coordinate with Biology faculty to order research supplies.
• Monitor and coordinate maintenance of laboratory equipment (including microscopes, spectrophotometers, electrophoresis apparatus, etc.) in teaching and research spaces.
• Coordinate with school Laboratory Assistants and Coordinators to schedule lab cleaning, floor washing and waxing, and repair/upkeep of lab benches and storage areas.
• Oversight of laboratory safety for teaching and, as needed, research labs. Lab safety duties include:
  • Coordinate with faculty, professional staff, and the UNE Health and Safety Officer to ensure adherence to safety standards in teaching laboratories.
  • Perform routine safety checks of hazardous waste satellite accumulation areas, eyewash stations and safety showers in teaching and research labs.
  • Understand and comply with the SDS and HAZCOM policies and procedures of UNE’s comprehensive OSHA compliance program.
  • Understand and comply with Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Standards.
  • Understand and comply with the University of New England Safety Manual.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA requirements (29 CFR Part 1910) for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as defined by the University Chemical Hygiene Officers, the Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator (EHSC), the supervisor and Chapter 17 of the University of New England Safety Manual.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogen Standard (29 CFR ) and Chapter 8 of the University of New England Safety Manual.

Bachelor’s degree in biology or a related field and 3-5 years of experience working in a life sciences laboratory setting is required. Master’s degree in biology or a relevant field is preferred.

• Working knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and proper use and basic maintenance of laboratory equipment.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including early mornings, evenings, and occasional weekends, based on operational needs.
