General

Summary:

The Field Technician I (FT1) position is a support technical professional who works with a team of IT specialists in maintaining, deploying, and supporting desktop and laptop computers and office productivity software for Judicial Branch employees. The FT1 will also support local and wide area networks, as well as audiovisual equipment and video conferencing systems. This is an entry‑level field technology position that will assume many of the same roles as a Field Technician II (FT2) with the understanding that training and/or assistance may be required  FT1 is primarily responsible for direct technical support for State courthouses and other Judicial Branch facilities throughout Maine, providing technical user and customer service support for judicial officers and staff.

The FT1 must learn to work independently to perform a full range of system administrative functions in a complex IT environment and must be capable of directing escalated problems to the appropriate resources. Excellent customer service skills, strong communication skills, and the ability to respond to emergency calls during off hours are required. On‑job training will be provided by other state staff and may be supplemented by classroom and electronic trainings approved by the Manager of Technology & Infrastructure.

Statewide travel is required.

Responsibilities
  • Provide technical support for desktops and laptops running various operating systems; support user VOIP desk‑sets and TCP/IP LAN and WAN networks, including troubleshooting, configuration, and Tier2/3 support.
  • Administer computer support functions such as imaging, deploying, software provisioning, troubleshooting, and remote access; manage client software (e.g., Microsoft Office).
  • Handle secure equipment retirement.
  • Support audiovisual equipment and video conference systems.
  • Participate in the development of Judicial Branch technical plans and coordinate activities with OIT members, other Judicial Branch personnel, and other agencies regarding client devices, network, audiovisual, videoconferencing, telecommunication, and other technical issues.
  • Install new equipment and repair or replace old equipment in Judicial Branch facilities statewide.
  • Ensure all information systems operate securely and reliably; maintain and manage hardware inventory data (serial numbers, locations, users, equipment status).
  • Maintain relationships with multiple technical vendors; assist in drafting and documenting department and operational procedures; write work orders to secure services from vendors and the Executive Branch Office of Information Technology; assist with help‑desk trouble tickets; assist with delivering IT training to employees and groups.
  • Support and/or learn various computing platforms (Windows, macOS, Google, Unix, Android, iOS, etc.); assist on large‑scale OIT projects; maintain audiovisual equipment for the MJB; provide IT support for special high‑priority MJB events.
Education & Experience
  • Associate degree or technology certification(s) required (e.g., Microsoft, Apple, CompTIA). Experience may be substituted for the degree requirement.
  • 1–3 years of experience supporting personal computers/devices in an office enterprise environment; multi‑platform experience is a plus.
  • Experience with videoconferencing equipment and audiovisual equipment is a plus.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science is preferred.
