Job DescriptionLead with purpose. Make a difference every day.
The Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County is looking for an experienced, compassionate, and collaborative leader to join our team as our new Director of Operations.
This is more than a management position; it's an opportunity to help shape the future of one of Midcoast Maine's leading animal welfare organizations.
For nearly 40 years, PMHS has been committed to providing compassionate care, treatment, and placement for companion animals while supporting the people who love them. Today, our work extends far beyond adoption. From our community spay/neuter programs and pet food pantry to our in-house veterinary clinic and growing volunteer and foster network, we are continually evolving to meet the needs of animals and our community.
As Director of Operations, you'll work alongside an experienced Executive Director and a dedicated leadership team to oversee daily shelter operations, mentor staff, coordinate with our veterinary team, and help ensure every animal receives exceptional care. You'll have the opportunity to build strong teams, improve processes, solve challenges, and help guide an organization that is committed to continuous improvement.
We're looking for someone who understands that successful animal shelters require both compassion and sound operational leadership. Someone who enjoys developing people, finding practical solutions, making thoughtful decisions, and creating an environment where staff, volunteers, and animals can thrive.
If you're an experienced shelter professional or someone with comparable leadership experience in animal welfare who is ready to take the next step in your career, we'd love to meet you.
What We Offer- The opportunity to make a lasting impact on the lives of animals and the people who care about them.
- A collaborative leadership team that values ideas, initiative, and continuous learning and improvement.
- The ability to help shape the future of a growing, mission-driven organization.
- Competitive salary based on experience ($60,000 - $67,000)
- Paid time off, paid holidays, SIMPLE IRA employer-matched retirement plan, health insurance, and other benefits.
- A workplace where teamwork, respect, and compassion guide everything we do.
Every day is different. Every day matters.
