Crew members (
ages 15-18 ) are selected through a competitive application process and supervised by a trained leadership team. Successful candidates receive a bi-weekly wage plus hands‑on education and employment experience. Members must be willing to meet the challenges of working outdoors by demonstrating maturity, enthusiasm, and a strong work ethic. A commitment to the environment and to their local communities is essential.
Our priority projects at Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge will focus on creating engaging outdoor experiences, including the development of the Sense of Wonder Trail, Nature Play Elements, Pollinator Gardens, and a Pet Memorial, while exploring recreational opportunities like fishing, kayaking, hiking, archery, and participation in the Junior Ranger Program.
APEX Youth Connection will also bring exciting opportunities to the table, including the upkeep of the local pump track, the construction of bat houses and caterpillar houses, pollinator and vegetable garden expansion and participation in the Earn‑a‑Bike program. These hands‑on projects will provide youth with valuable skills while engaging them in meaningful conservation work.

Duties:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Work alongside 2‑3 other crew members while completing priority conservation projects
- Respond to and work with the leadership team in a respectful and productive manner
- Promote a safe work environment for fellow crew members and the public
- Maintain a positive attitude and enthusiasm to learn more about conservation and natural resource management
Qualifications:
Candidates should possess, at a minimum, the following:
- Interest in developing skills and experience in natural resource conservation and management
- Commitment to protecting and improving the quality of the environment for human and natural communities
- The ability to work responsibly and cooperatively as a member of a team
- Capable of performing strenuous physical labor under variety of outdoor conditions (ie. Summer heat, bugs, rain etc)
- Candidates must be at least 15 years old by June 23, 2025

Employment Period: June 23 through August 14, 2026
Workweek: 24 hours per week, Tuesday through Friday from 9am-3pm
Compensation: $16 per hour
