The Tower Crane Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating tower cranes on commercial and industrial construction projects throughout Maine. This position plays a key role in lifting, moving, and placing materials and equipment on large-scale job sites while ensuring adherence to all safety standards, company policies, and project timelines.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Operate tower cranes to lift, move, position, and place materials and equipment as directed by site supervision.
  • Conduct daily crane inspections and complete all required safety documentation before use.
  • Maintain awareness of load capacities, swing radius, and weather conditions that may affect crane operation.
  • Follow OSHA, NCCCO, and company safety protocols at all times.
  • Participate in daily job-site safety meetings and toolbox talks.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in and around the crane.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Site Cleanup & Organization
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area around the crane and general site.
  • Remove debris, scrap materials, and assist with trash or recycling removal.
  • Help organize tools, rigging equipment, and materials.
  • Equipment & Safety Support
  • Inspect and maintain rigging gear, slings, chokers, and lifting devices.
  • Perform basic maintenance checks or cleaning on the crane exterior and operator cab.
  • Assist in setting up barricades, signage, and safety fencing.
  • Support safety team with spotter or signal person duties as needed.
  • Serve as a signal person or tagline handler for other crane or hoisting operations.
  • Assist with layout, measuring, and verifying lift plans on the ground.
  • Work with the site foreman to ensure efficient coordination of crane operations.
  • Snow removal, sweeping, or spreading gravel in staging areas.
  • Help assemble or disassemble temporary structures or scaffolding (if trained).
  • Participate in site safety meetings and equipment inspections.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Required:

    NCCCO or equivalent Tower Crane Operator Certification.
  • Required:

    Valid driver’s license; CDL preferred but not required.
  • Preferred:
    Minimum 3 years of experience operating tower cranes on commercial construction projects.
  • Strong understanding of lift plans, rigging, and signaling practices.
  • Excellent communication and situational awareness.
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions and at heights.
  • Commitment to safety and adherence to company policies.
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines
  • Have reliable transportation
  • Ability to travel within the state of Maine
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be able to climb ladders and access the crane cab safely, often several stories high.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while operating the crane.
  • Must have good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity.
  • Must possess adequate vision and hearing (corrective devices permitted) to safely operate equipment and communicate via radio.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs as needed for maintenance or setup.
  • Must be able to tolerate heights and work outdoors in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, wind, etc.).
  • Ability to maintain balance and awareness when working at elevated levels.
  • Must be physically able to enter, exit, and perform inspections of crane components.
