Position Overview

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) supports members to build relationships, effective communication, and independence. The DSP maintains a safe environment, treats members with dignity and respect, and represents Waypoint professionally in communities and residences. The DSP works collaboratively with the team, parents, guardians, and program staff, upholding professional ethics, confidentiality, and values.

Responsibilities
  • Develop a rapport with residents and cultivate a safe, supportive relationship.
  • Provide support and guidance during skill‑building activities.
  • Implement individual treatment plans and positive support plans for members.
  • Encourage self‑help skills in daily living activities, including meal preparation, hygiene, and environment upkeep.
  • Advise healthy eating, activity, and overall wellness choices.
  • Transport residents in approved vehicles for activities or medical appointments.
  • Exercise sound judgment to ensure members’ safety and welfare; notify House Manager of any situation that could impact operations or safety.
  • Respect each member’s privacy and confidentiality.
  • Handle medications safely and administer them as required.
  • Manage member funds and record expenditures accurately.
  • Comply with licensing, Maine Care, Person‑Centered Planning, and Waypoint policies.
  • Collect accurate, timely data—update ISP progress notes, treatment plans, and positive support plans—daily or as scheduled.
  • Follow the work schedule, maintain attendance, and record hours worked.
  • Follow mandated‑reporter guidelines for reportable events.
  • Maintain agency funds by recording program expenditures accurately.
  • Develop and maintain cooperative, professional relationships with all staff and resolve conflicts quickly.
  • Participate as a team member, accepting direction and feedback from the House Manager and team.
  • Maintain required DSP certifications.
  • Attend and participate in all required staff meetings and trainings.
  • Demonstrate flexibility to assist in all residential settings as needed.
  • Ensure a clean, orderly residence or program site; perform cleaning routines and checklists, and independently initiate household maintenance as required.
  • Follow all agency safety standards and procedures.
  • Alert House Manager to safety or maintenance needs per internal protocols.
  • Follow transportation policies and identify any vehicle maintenance concerns.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Competencies / Skills / Abilities
  • No prior experience required, but must desire to support individuals with intellectual and complex disabilities.
  • Willingness to implement positive behavior support and structured activities.
  • Excellent communication with members, families, coworkers, and other professionals.
Education / Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must become DSP, CRMA, and Safety Care certified as a primary responsibility of the DSP position.
  • Must have a valid state driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Must be proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English.
  • Ability to learn beginner‑level information technology skills.
Physical Demands
  • Normal flexibility and ability to raise hands above head.
  • Ability to stand, walk, run, shuffle, and stoop for several minutes.
  • Ability to kneel and then stand up.
  • Ability to bend 45° at the trunk and twist to either side.
  • Ability to grasp firmly.
  • Ability to push and pull personal care equipment, and lift up to 50 pounds independently using safe body mechanics.
  • Ability to implement Safety Care techniques to escort and establish member safety in emergencies or per the support plan.
