Summary of PositionStudent Foot Patrol Officers are responsible for providing a visible public safety presence on the Ferris State University campus. Foot Patrol Officers patrol campus grounds and residence halls on foot to observe, detect, and report criminal or suspicious activity. This position supports the Department of Public Safety by enhancing campus safety through proactive patrol, communication, and assistance to the campus community.
Student Foot Patrol Officers do not possess arrest authority and perform their duties under the supervision of sworn officers and professional staff.

Position Requirements- As an individual who is responsible for driving on behalf of the university, a driving record check will be run pursuant to university policies.
- The individual will be required to sign an authorization to run a criminal history background and driving record check.
- A standard Foot Patrol shift consists of six (6) hours, beginning at 2100 hours and ending at 0300 hours.
- Between November 1 and April 1, shift hours may be adjusted to 2200 hours to 0400 hours to accommodate enforcement and support activities related to snow removal operations on campus.
- Patrol assigned campus areas and residence halls on foot to observe, detect, and report criminal activity, suspicious behavior, safety hazards, and policy violations.
- Maintain a visible presence to deter crime and promote a sense of safety within the campus community.
- Operate department radios using proper radio procedures and terminology.
- Communicate effectively with students, staff, and visitors during patrols and make contact with on‑duty residence hall staff while patrolling residential facilities.
- Provide general assistance and information to members of the campus community.
- Provide campus safety escorts from one campus location to another campus location, in accordance with department policy.
- Prepare and submit a Daily Student Report for each assigned shift.
- Assist sworn officers and professional staff when directed and when lawfully ordered to do so.
- Provide security support or assist with traffic control at special events, emergencies, or campus activities as assigned.
- Assist during major incidents or disasters on campus as directed by supervisory personnel.
- Perform additional duties connected with the Department of Public Safety as assigned by a supervising officer.
