Overview
Licensed Vocational Nurse II at Big Spring State Hospital, Big Spring, TX.
Responsibilities- Attends work on a regular basis and may be assigned specific shift schedules, rotating schedules, extended shifts, and/or overtime as needed, and performs other duties as assigned.
- Administers medications and treatments and assists other medical staff in examining and caring for patients across locations as needed.
- Performs complex nursing procedures in accordance with facility and state regulations (e.g., wound care, breathing treatments) and collects specimens for laboratory examination.
- Trains and instructs new LVN staff and aides; assists RNs with implementation of protocols, procedures, and programs to improve health and safety.
- Monitors weight, diet, meals, vital signs, and health status after medications or procedures; documents in the medical record per procedures and protocols.
- Fosters interdisciplinary collaboration and communicates information to the RN and other team members to support treatment decisions.
- Serves as a resource/mentor for new LVNs and assists the RN Supervisor with on-the-job training.
- Performs duties to support disaster response, COOP activation, or other agency requirements as assigned.
- Responds to emergency situations and follows safety and infection control procedures.
- Knowledge of nursing care standards, procedures, and the principles of patient care.
- Knowledge of emergency procedures and equipment (e.g., CPR); ability to assess and care for residents and staff in emergencies.
- Reasoning and problem-solving skills; ability to use electronic health records after training.
- Effective communication and instructional abilities; ability to interact with individuals with diverse needs and backgrounds.
- CPR certification maintained; ability to perform CPR and related physical requirements.
- Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) in Texas or a state with reciprocity via the Nurse Licensure Compact.
- If transporting patients, valid Texas driver license or obtain within 90 days; out-of-state driving records as required.
- Graduation from an LVN program.
- Minimum six months LVN employment experience required; twelve months preferred. Six months of experience with individuals with mental illness preferred.
- Background checks, pre-employment drug screen, registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, Employee Misconduct, LEIE);
Selective Service registration for males 18–25 if applicable. - All applicants must be 18+;
Waco Center for Youth applicants must be 21+. - Flexibility in work hours; overtime and extended hours may be required.
- Immunization policy compliance is required; vaccination may be required or protective measures implemented if not vaccinated.
- This position may be eligible for telework per policy and supervisor discretion.
