Job Description

HHSC provides specialized care for Texans in need across nine psychiatric hospitals, one youth residential treatment facility, and thirteen state‑supported living centers.

These facilities are accredited by The Joint Commission and offer recovery‑oriented, science‑based treatment.

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Chief Nurse Executive/Nurse Administrator/Assistant Chief Nurse Executive, the Nurse III:

  • Observes, assesses, plans, intervenes, evaluates outcomes, and documents all aspects of patient care; coordinates scheduling within assigned areas; provides primary management for the service area during the assigned shift with a supportive yet clear supervisory manner; and may supervise, counsel, and evaluate other nursing staff.
  • Collaborates with Nurse Coordinator, other charge nurses, and Mental Health Supervisor/Specialist to ensure 24‑hour continuity of care.
  • May assume duties of the Nurse Coordinator/Nurse Manager during absence.
  • Provides direct nursing care to individual patients as needed; duties may include exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, which may include participating in disaster response or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation; such participation may require an alternate shift pattern or location.
  • May be eligible for additional pay for work performed on evenings, nights, and/or weekends.
Essential Job Functions (EJFs)
  • Attends work regularly and may be asked to work a rotating schedule, extended shift, or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy.
  • Assesses the health/mental status of patients upon admission or transfer, documents assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation, and determines priorities and plans therapeutic nursing care. Performs CPR/Heimlich techniques correctly and safely. (30%)
  • Provides direction and coordination of staffing and patient care activities on assigned units with nurse administrators and staff; addresses performance problems promptly and keeps accurate documentation of interventions; coordinates the effective utilization of nursing personnel. (30%)
  • Facilitates a smooth admission or transfer during working hours, communicates with admissions staff, reviews written documentation to ensure appropriate status, and triages patients when needed. (15%)
  • Carries out medical staff practitioner’s orders and implements nursing interventions according to acceptable standards and hospital policies. Assists in the client abuse and neglect investigation process. (5%)
