Equipment Mechanic , II, or III TX

Overview

Equipment Mechanic I, II, or III — Big Spring, TX. Maintains and repairs a wide range of wheeled vehicles and construction equipment to support TxDOT operations, including emergency and inclement weather response. The level (I, II, or III) is determined based on work experience, education, skill, and business needs.

• Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts (including air brake and anti-locking systems).
• Analyze and interpret computerized diagnostic equipment information.
• Complete repair order paperwork and enter data into fleet information management system.
• Maintain and repair heavy equipment used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance.
• Check lighting and wiring to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights, and parking lights.
• Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment; move items as needed.
• Perform quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
• Prepare vehicles for use by verifying safety features such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and mobile radios.
• Troubleshoot, test, and repair electrical systems, electronic ignitions, and fuel injection systems.
• Use computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and conduct complex diagnostics on vehicles/equipment.
• Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.

• Train less experienced technicians.
• Travel and perform work in other shops throughout the state as required.

• Lead and train less experienced technicians.
• Perform duties of the Shop Coordinator in their absence.

Education/Experience by level

• Equipment Mechanic I – 2 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
• Equipment Mechanic II – 4 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
• Equipment Mechanic III – 7 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.

Substitution options:

• Associate’s degree in automotive and/or diesel technology may substitute for 2 years of experience.
• Certificates of course completion from a technical training institute in automotive and diesel technology may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.

• Valid driver’s license (state vehicle operation required).
• Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
• Safety Impact Certificate.
• Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
• Motor Vehicle Safety Inspector license or must obtain if performing state safety vehicle inspections.

• CDL preferred.
• Diesel or Automotive Technology associate degree or technical certifications.
• ASE certifications.
• Experience using diagnostic equipment and software.
• Experience with heavy/construction equipment.

• Proficient use of hand and power tools; knowledge of diesel, gasoline, CNG, and LPG engine repair.
• Ability to diagnose and repair electronic and mechanical subsystems; proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word).
• Ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams and schematics; adherence to safety standards.

• Subject to environmental conditions, including heat, cold, noise, vibration, and hazards from moving vehicles or chemicals.
• Required to wear protective gear (respirator, hard hat, etc.).
• Work may occur in small spaces, crawl spaces, or narrow aisles; lifting up to 50 lbs with assistance; various positions and movements (standing, walking, bending, crawling, reaching, etc.).
