Maintenance Worker, Building Maintenance, Utility Technician
This position is responsible for assisting with the installation, repair, and maintenance of water and sewer lines.
- Serves as lead worker at the work site.
- Installs, maintains and repairs water and sewer lines.
- Makes water and sewer taps for new services.
- Lays out water and sewer lines.
- Locates leaks in water and sewer lines.
- Installs water meters and cut-off valves.
- Installs and repairs of water and sewer mains.
- Repairs cuts necessitated by utility repairs.
- Assists with the location of water and sewer lines for other utility companies.
- Flushes fire hydrants and water lines. Flags traffic; places regulatory signs at work sites.
- Gathers materials necessary to perform duties.
- Maintains assigned tools and vehicle.
- Keeps work trucks, backhoes, and works sites clean of debris.
- Backfills excavated areas.
- Insures that all work orders are completed in a timely manner.
- Responds to emergency service calls as required; remains on call after hours a minimum of one week per month.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma/GED or equivalent work experience.
- Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
- One year of experience in general underground utility construction maintenance or plumbing activities.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of a Commercial Driver's (CDL) License Class B issued by the State of Texas for the type of vehicle or equipment operated within ninety (90) days of transfer.
- Knowledge of City and departmental safety policies and procedures.
- Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
- Knowledge of the methods and practices of installing, maintaining and repairing water and sewer lines and mains.
- Skill in the use of such equipment and tools such as backhoe, dump truck, concrete saws, jackhammers, tampers, boring tools, pipe locators, pipe cutters and various hand tools.
- Skill in the construction, maintenance and repair of water and sewer lines and mains.
- Skill in performing basic mathematical calculations.
- Skill in reading maps.
- Skill in oral communication.
The Distribution & Collection Manager, Distribution & Collection Superintendent or the D&C Supervisor assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINESGuidelines include City and department policies and procedures, supervisor instructions and accepted work safety practices. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITYThe work consists of related water and sewer maintenance and repair duties. The need to repair lines in the street during heavy traffic and to locate, dig around other utility lines, inclement weather and equipment failure contribute to the complexity of the work.
SCOPE AND EFFECTThe purpose of this position is to construct, repair and service water and sewer lines and mains. Effective performance facilitates the speed and accuracy of repairs and service.
PERSONAL CONTACTSContacts are typically with co-workers, other City employees, employees of other utility companies, and the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTSContacts are typically to exchange information and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDSThe work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, stooping, and crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
WORK ENVIRONMENTThe work is performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, cold and inclement weather, raw sewage, and possibly infectious diseases. The work requires the use of safety devices such as masks, goggles, and gloves.
