Research Scientist, Materials Engineer
Overview
E Ink is seeking a highly motivated, creative, and hands‑on Scientist to conduct leading‑edge materials and process research for novel electrophoretic display technology. The Senior Scientist will be based in Billerica, MA, and engage globally with E Ink’s R&D and manufacturing departments to champion technical innovations from conception to commercialization.
Key Responsibilities- Drive the design and development of microcapsule slurry and coating.
- Develop a deep understanding of the interplay between material properties, ink formulation, fluid dynamics, substrate interactions and drying mechanisms to improve coating quality and large‑area uniformity.
- Identify correlation between critical properties of individual layers and electro‑optical performance of multilayer device stack, and develop in‑line and off‑line characterization methods to ensure quality.
- Provide technical leadership and hands‑on support across all stages of the coating process, including compounding, slurry delivery, coating application, post‑coating treatments and film characterization.
- Work with and contribute to an agile, inspiring and supportive team to rapidly advance project goals and actively pursue contingency plans.
- Document the results in comprehensive technical reports and in patents for intellectual property.
- Ph.D. in materials science, chemical engineering, or a related field and 2+ years of experience in thin‑film coating process development; or M.S. in materials science, chemical engineering, or a related field and 5+ years of experience in thin‑film coating process development.
- Expertise in heterogeneous fluid rheology, surface interactions, drying behavior and characterizations.
- Expertise in a wide range of coating technologies such as slot‑die, gravure, blade and multilayer lamination techniques.
- Knowledge of Design of Experiments and statistical analysis.
- Excellent troubleshooting, teamwork, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Self‑directed, motivated, and hands‑on personality. Ability to work in a fast‑paced, open‑minded, highly interdisciplinary work environment.
- Experience with microcapsule‑based functional coating is highly preferred.
- Knowledge of electrical and optical characterization in thin‑film devices.
- Technical project management experience.

Salary Range DisclosureThe annual base salary range for this position is $120,000 to $150,000, not including any variable pay. The total compensation package may include performance‑based incentives, discretionary bonuses, and other variable pay components. The salary range for this position reflects a reasonable estimate at the time of posting and may vary based on factors such as experience, skills, education, certifications, and location.
