Our facility in Billerica, Massachusetts, located in the greater Boston area, designs and manufactures advanced photonics products based on MEMS and micro-scale optical devices. Our technology enables high-performance, compact, and cost-effective solutions across a wide range of applications.
This site develops and manufactures Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) products-laser-based imaging systems that have transformed ophthalmic care and enabled impactful advances in cardiology, dermatology, oncology, gastroenterology, and other medical specialties.
We are seeking a Manufacturing Engineer with a strong Optoelectronic Test background to play a critical role in supporting new technology introduction, manufacturing test development, and continuous improvement for our next-generation optical engine products.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, develop, and optimize manufacturing test processes for electro-optical subcomponents and optical module assemblies.
- Design, validate, and support test setups using oscilloscopes, optical spectrum analyzers (OSAs), optical power meters, and related instrumentation.
- Analyze test data to assess module performance, yield, and reliability, and drive data-based process improvements.
- Specify test equipment, fixtures, tooling, and software needed to meet product performance and manufacturing requirements.
- Support software-driven testing, including automated or semi-automated test sequences, data logging, and analysis.
- Investigate manufacturing and test failures, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions and process controls.
- Perform and support failure analysis of optical modules and subcomponents in collaboration with R&D and Quality teams.
- Write clear work instructions and train manufacturing operators and technicians on test procedures and equipment.
- Lead and report progress on continuous improvement initiatives focused on yield, throughput, and test robustness.
- Support transfer of new products from R&D into manufacturing, ensuring test coverage, repeatability, and alignment with released products.
- Partner closely with Operations, Quality, and Engineering to meet production goals while maintaining safety and product quality.
- Promote a safe work environment by identifying and addressing near-misses and test-related hazards.
- BS in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics, or equivalent practical experience.
- 5+ years of experience in a manufacturing, test, or process engineering role within an electro-optical or photonics environment.
- Hands-on experience with electro-optical test equipment, such as:
- Optical Spectrum Analyzers (OSAs)
- Oscilloscopes
- Optical power meters
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret test data and identify performance trends.
- Experience troubleshooting complex electrical, optical, or opto-electronic systems.
- Familiarity with software-driven or automated testing (e.g., Python, LabVIEW, MATLAB, or similar) is preferred.
- Experience applying Six Sigma or structured problem-solving methodologies.
- Lean Manufacturing experience is a plus.
- Excellent communication, documentation, and organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
- Self-directed, highly motivated engineer able to manage multiple priorities and collaborate across functions.
- Pay Range: $93,000 - $120,000 annually, depending on experience
