Job Description

Reports To: Director of Finance and Operations

Position Summary: The Crossing Guard Supervisor is responsible for the recruitment, scheduling, training, supervision, and evaluation of all school crossing guards within the Billerica Public Schools. The Supervisor ensures the safe and efficient operation of student crossing locations before and after school while maintaining compliance with local, state, and district policies. This position serves as the primary liaison between crossing guards, school administrators, the Billerica Police Department, and the Director of Finance and Operations regarding crossing guard operations and safety concerns.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Recruit, interview, recommend for hire, and train crossing guards.
  • Develop and maintain schedules for all crossing guard assignments.
  • Coordinate substitute coverage and respond to daily staffing shortages.
  • Conduct regular site visits to monitor performance, safety practices, and compliance with established procedures.
  • Evaluate crossing guard performance and provide coaching and corrective action when necessary.
  • Maintain accurate attendance, payroll, and personnel records for crossing guards.
  • Coordinate onboarding and annual training programs, including safety protocols and traffic management procedures.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for crossing guard concerns, parent inquiries, and school administration requests.
  • Work collaboratively with the Billerica Police Department and municipal officials to address traffic safety issues near schools.
  • Review and recommend improvements to crossing locations, signage, and pedestrian safety measures.
  • Investigate incidents or accidents involving crossing guards and prepare written reports.
  • Ensure all crossing guards comply with district policies and Massachusetts laws regarding pedestrian safety.
  • Assist in developing emergency response procedures related to student arrival and dismissal.
  • Prepare reports and recommendations for district leadership regarding staffing needs and operational improvements.
  • Perform duties of a crossing guard if needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Finance and Operations.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s or bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Experience supervising employees or volunteers preferred.
  • Experience in public safety, transportation, municipal services, education, or related field preferred.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise professional judgment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and scheduling software.
  • Valid Massachusetts driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of pedestrian safety practices and traffic control procedures.
  • Ability to effectively supervise and motivate staff.
  • Strong problem‑solving and conflict‑resolution skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to establish positive working relationships with school personnel, law enforcement, parents, and community members.
  • Ability to respond appropriately during emergencies and changing operational conditions.
Working Conditions

Primarily outdoor work during school arrival and dismissal times with exposure to varying weather conditions. Frequent travel between school locations within the district. Occasional evening meetings or training sessions. Moderate physical activity including walking, standing, and driving between locations.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods without assistance.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to see and hear adequately to monitor traffic and pedestrian activity.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
Terms of Employment

Work year: 180 school days plus 5 days before and 5 days after. 23 hours a week or 4.60 hours a day. Salary: $25.00 to $28.00 per hour. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of all required background checks and compliance with Massachusetts employment requirements. Position type:
Part‑time.
