As a Sr Engineer I, Materials
, you will provide engineering support in multiple areas, contribute expert advice on materials selection and fabrication, corrosion control, and maintaining the mechanical integrity of pressure retaining systems. This role will demonstrate leadership in managing Risk Based Inspection (RBI) analysis of pressure containing equipment and working with inspectors to develop, implement and analyze pressure equipment inspection plans.

Responsibilities
  • Apply materials and corrosion engineering expertise to support the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of refinery equipment.
  • Analyze material performance and corrosion damage mechanisms to develop practical engineering solutions for maintenance, operations, and capital projects.
  • Design, review, and support materials selection, coatings, corrosion control, and welding approaches in accordance with established standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage and support technical troubleshooting efforts, including failure investigations, testing, inspection planning, and validation of designs and operating limits.
  • Partner with operations, inspection, reliability, maintenance, and process teams to monitor corrosion performance and key process variables.
  • Support mechanical integrity, risk-based inspection, and integrity operating window programs through analysis, recommendations, and clear technical documentation.
  • Develop and maintain engineering drawings, reports, and records that enable effective communication and informed decision-making.
  • Stay current on materials and corrosion technologies, contribute improvement ideas, and deliver defined projects as a trusted technical resource while continuing to build professional capability.
Qualifications
  • Willing and able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).
  • Possess a valid driver's license
  • Travel up to 5%.
    Operate company vehicle on site premises and/or public roads up to 10%.
  • Work extended hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays, and perform occasional duties.
  • Transport articles up to 50 pounds
  • Climb ladders and stairs up to 200 feet, and wear fall protection
  • Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines, around chemicals and hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat, and in harsh weather conditions.
  • Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment.
  • Maintain face daily for proper respirator/face mask seal (examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven).
  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher
  • 3 or more years of experience managing corrosion and materials programs
  • Intermediate or greater proficiency applying failure investigation methodology and problem-solving principles
Preferred Qualifications
  • 5 or more years of experience managing corrosion and materials programs at a refinery
  • Working knowledge of:
  • Sections I, V, VIII, and IX of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code
  • Requirements of ASME B31.3 and API Inspection Codes 510, 570, and 653
  • Damage mechanisms that affect refinery equipment including fundamentals of corrosion, basic forms of corrosion, and methods of corrosion control, as well as API Corrosion and Materials Recommended Practices 571, 491-939-C
  • Performing remaining life and fitness for service evaluations
  • Risk-based inspection methodologies and how to utilize the methodologies
  • Proficiency with computer applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook, SAP, PCMS, and API RBI software
Compensation

This position has a base salary range of $137,700 - $168,300.

The Billings Refinery is located in Billings, Montana. Its facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units.
