OverviewThe Montana Department of Transportation is recruiting Field Project Technicians. This position serves as an experienced Field Project Technician within the Billings District and is responsible for coordinating and conducting inspection, sampling, and testing procedures to verify that construction project features and materials conform with standard specifications, department requirements, and contract agreements. The role also includes staking and surveying procedures and provides guidance to less experienced technicians.
ResponsibilitiesCoordinate and conduct inspection, sampling, and testing procedures. Verify construction features and materials against specifications and contract agreements. Perform staking and surveying tasks. Provide technical assistance and guidance to less experienced technicians. Participate in behavioral-based interview if selected.
QualificationsHigh school diploma with coursework in algebra, geometry, or trigonometry. Preferred experience in construction, laboratory testing, transportation design, engineering, or related field. Preferred or required experience in inspection, sampling, testing, and/or surveying. Four to five years of highway construction or related field experience, with at least two to three years in inspection, sampling, testing, and/or surveying. One year of supervisory or team lead experience (for level III).
Level III Certification under the Department’s Engineering Project Technician Advancement Policy (for level III). Knowledge of contract administration, project inspection and testing procedures, general construction engineering principles, sampling and laboratory testing procedures, State, AASHTO, FHWA, and ASTM standards, maintenance and calibration of specialized tools, surveying and highway construction methods, project implementation and documentation techniques, project design and construction criteria, materials properties, and basic algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
Functions
Physical demands include repeated lifting up to 80 pounds and occasionally greater weights, carrying survey equipment over rough terrain, climbing and bending for sample retrieval, and operating gas, diesel, and electrically powered equipment. Extensive overnight travel throughout the Billings District (over 2,000 miles per month, often on short notice, weekends, and holidays) with approximately 75% of the employee’s time spent on travel.
Frequent day‑to‑day driving between projects is expected.

$22.46 – $26.09 hourly.
