Job Brief
Specialty Foundation Systems is seeking an accountable and experienced Project Design Engineer / Project Manager to oversee the engineering, design, drafting, and project management activities associated with soil-improvement systems, aggregate piers, helical piles, and related specialty foundation projects.
This position will manage projects from initial evaluation and conceptual design through final construction and closeout. The successful candidate will prepare engineering designs, calculations, drawings, specifications, schedules, budgets, and technical documentation while coordinating with clients, consultants, contractors, vendors, and field personnel.
Key Responsibilities
- Engineering Design and Analysis
- Develop technically sound and cost-effective foundation and soil-improvement solutions for aggregate pier, helical pile, and related geotechnical construction projects.
- Review geotechnical reports, structural drawings, loading information, surveys, specifications, and other project documents.
- Perform engineering analyses and calculations related to bearing capacity, settlement, uplift, lateral loading, installation requirements, and foundation performance.
- Determine appropriate pile or pier types, sizes, lengths, spacing, capacities, installation criteria, and testing requirements.
- Prepare and review design calculations, engineering reports, technical memoranda, specifications, and construction recommendations.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable building codes, engineering standards, project specifications, and accepted geotechnical engineering practices.
- Provide engineering support during construction and evaluate field conditions that differ from the original design assumptions.
- Review load-test results, installation records, quality-control data, and field documentation to confirm compliance with design requirements.
- Prepare and certify engineering deliverables when required.
CAD and Construction Documents
- Prepare and oversee the development of CAD drawings, including foundation layouts, pile and pier plans, sections, details, schedules, and installation drawings.
- Translate engineering calculations and design concepts into accurate, clear, and constructible plans.
- Develop preliminary layouts, design drawings, permit documents, submittal drawings, and as-built drawings.
- Review architectural, structural, civil, and geotechnical drawings to identify conflicts, missing information, and constructability concerns.
- Maintain drawing standards, templates, layer conventions, revision controls, and document-management procedures.
- Coordinate design revisions and ensure that current drawings and specifications are distributed to the appropriate project participants.
- Review CAD work prepared by designers, drafters, and other engineering personnel for accuracy and completeness.
- Utilize AutoCAD and other applicable engineering and visualization software to communicate proposed designs effectively.
Project Management
- Manage assigned projects from initial proposal and design through construction, testing, documentation, and final closeout.
- Prepare project scopes, design schedules, budgets, staffing plans, and technical work plans.
- Schedule, coordinate, and monitor engineering, drafting, procurement, and construction activities.
- Track project costs, schedules, deliverables, labor requirements, and overall performance.
- Identify project risks, design challenges, scheduling conflicts, and cost concerns and develop appropriate solutions.
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining quality, schedule, and budget requirements.
- Coordinate project kickoff meetings, design reviews, construction meetings, and closeout activities.
- Prepare and manage RFIs, submittals, change orders, design revisions, field directives, and project correspondence.
- Communicate regularly with clients regarding project status, design requirements, scheduling, field conditions, and potential changes in scope.
- Assist with preparing proposals, cost estimates, scope descriptions, fee estimates, and technical presentations.
- Review contracts and project documents to ensure that engineering services and deliverables align with the agreed scope…
