Electrical Engineering
Provides support to technical staff, engineers, and project managers for the due diligence, investigation, alteration, impact assessment, permitting, design, development, and construction of utility, industrial, and commercial scale transmission and communication line projects in the public and private sector. Tasks may include assistance with the research, design, planning, concept development, construction, and upgrading of overhead/underground high voltage transmission line projects, power distribution/transmission substations, fiber-optic, line extensions, power regulation, renewable energy, major additions, as well as protection and control systems in a wide variety of linear contexts.
Generates accurate and concise reports and documentation regarding assigned material, plans, installations, and construction specifications.
Job Duties:
- Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, cont rollability, safety, reliability, and functionality of transmission assets.
- With minimal supervision, assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data and drawings relating to engineering services for high voltage power transmission and distribution, existing and new build transmission structures, substation and switch station components, equipment specifications for procurement package development and pricing, transmission asset design, electric utility construction design and review processes, and Rural Utility Service (RUS)/IEEE/NESC standards and regulations.
- Perform basic professional transmission engineering work relating to the design and development of grid and structure details, to include specifying all parts, hardware, insulators, lightning protection, and grounding details for different pole materials, such as steel, round wood, or laminated wood in conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits.
- Provides technical engineering assistance on various design requirements, equipment sizing and cabling, panel design, substations, and environmentally acceptable conduit/trenching/overhead strategies to ensure the safety, reliability, efficiency, and functionality of systems and infrastructure.
- Support senior transmission engineers with research, detail engineering and support of transmission line projects (generally 69,000 volts to 500,000 volts) from conceptual design through construction.
- Assist with verifying the characteristics of a site and providing technical assistance with preliminary line routing and site selection, coordinating and assessing the impacts of line routes, station sites, real estate, licensing, construction, and environmental constraints on the overall engineering process.
- Under minimal supervision, perform basic calculations for electrical loads, equipment sizing, feeder sizing, voltage drop, sag/tension, grounding, lighting circuits and controls, facility and electrical service, power distribution, and materials. Write technical reports summarizing research with findings and conclusions, generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation using sketches, calculations, electronic systems, spreadsheets, and software.
- Assist technical staff and project managers with risk identification and assessment, offering input and analysis transmission matters such as line relocations, distribution substation capacity increases, operations support, transmission transformer or conductor replacements and reliability upgrades.
- Work with cross-functional teams in executing project work, including project controls, construction, procurement, document control, and environmental and permitting teams.
- Work collaboratively with other engineers and technical staff to perform electrical computer simulation models of transmission lines and substations, as well as technical power flow and transient stability simulation analysis to meet all NERC, WECC, and FERC compliance requirements.
- Assist with conducting studies to ensure the reliability of transmission systems, including power flow analysis, stability studies, voltage studies, technical analysis of disturbances…
