Job Description

The Security Officer provides a safe environment for patients, visitors, employees, and volunteers, typically in an office or ambulatory clinic setting. This position monitors visitor or patient activity, monitors premises inside and around the facility, enforces policy, provides assistance and direction, responds to emergencies, and protects employees, visitors, and company property.

Essential Functions
  • Operates and monitors security technology systems, including surveillance cameras, access control systems, and alarm systems. Ensures proper functioning and maintenance of security equipment.
  • De‑escalation: uses verbal and non‑verbal strategies to calm individuals and resolve conflicts peacefully, minimizing the need for physical force.
  • Dealing with violent patients: intervenes to protect the safety of everyone involved when patients act aggressively or violently, including using physical restraints when necessary.
  • Regulatory compliance: ensures compliance with regulations such as HIPAA when reporting crimes or incidents, disclosing only the minimum necessary information to law enforcement.
  • Bomb threat/suspicious package responses: trained to respond to bomb threats and suspicious packages, following protocols to ensure the safety of the facility.
  • Participation in drills: engages in exercises such as infant abduction and active shooter scenarios to prepare staff for real‑life situations.
  • Conducting searches: performs respectful and safe searches of patients and searches for narcotics, ensuring compliance with legal requirements.
  • Safety inspections: conducts inspections of walking surfaces, fire extinguishers, and overall facility safety to mitigate risks.
  • Parking enforcement: enforces parking regulations to ensure safety and accessibility, enhancing the patient experience.
  • Investigations: collaborates with HR and law enforcement to conduct investigations, following protocols for disclosing patient information and ensuring facility safety.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Current driver’s license (if applicable).
  • Current Basic Life Certification (BLS) for healthcare providers or willingness to obtain within 90 days of hire.
  • At least 21 years of age.
  • If located in the State of Montana, Security Guard Licensure is required within 120 days of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • One year of previous law enforcement, corrections, public safety, military police, or security experience.
Physical Requirements
  • Ongoing need to see and read information, labels, documents, monitors, and identify equipment and supplies, and to assess customer needs.
  • Frequent interaction with providers, colleagues, customers, patients/clients, and visitors that requires verbal communication, listening, and rapid understanding of spoken information.
  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate supplies and equipment with precision and accuracy, including frequent computer use for typing and accessing information.
  • Verbal and written communication skills to compose complete, coherent, and concise reports.
  • Analytical and observational ability to recognize suspicious behavior, criminal activity, and potential safety hazards.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically within a multi‑functional team in a fast‑paced environment.
Location

Intermountain Health St Vincent Regional Hospital, Billings, Montana

Hourly rate: $19.95 – $26.38.
