Job Summary:

Safely inspect, diagnose, maintain, and repair COP Construction heavy equipment and related fleet assets. This position supports field operations by helping ensure equipment is safe, reliable, properly maintained, and available when crews need it. Work is performed in the shop and at active or remote construction sites on Caterpillar, John Deere, Komatsu, Volvo, and other construction equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Follow all COP Construction safety rules, policies, procedures, and applicable jobsite requirements.
  • Inspect, diagnose, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair heavy construction equipment and related components.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and scheduled service in accordance with COP requirements and applicable manufacturer guidance.
  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, powertrain, engine, cooling, braking, steering, and other equipment-system issues within the employee’s training and competency.
  • Use logical, systematic troubleshooting to identify root causes rather than replacing parts without appropriate diagnosis.
  • Complete repairs accurately, test equipment operation, and verify that the equipment is safe and ready before returning it to service.
  • Identify and promptly communicate additional damage, wear, safety concerns, or upcoming maintenance needs found during inspection or repair.
  • Respond to equipment breakdowns and perform field repairs at active or remote COP construction projects as assigned.
  • Read and use service manuals, schematics, diagnostic information, specifications, and technical resources needed to complete assigned work.
  • Safely use hand and power tools, diagnostic equipment, torque wrenches, pullers, jacks, micrometers, calipers, presses, hoists, cranes, slings, cables, and other specialized equipment.
  • Accurately document inspections, maintenance, repairs, parts used, equipment condition, and work completed using COP-required processes.
  • Maintain personal tools in safe, serviceable condition and protect COP‑owned tools, equipment, vehicles, and other company property.
  • Communicate professionally with operators, field supervision, project teams, vendors, and other members of the Equipment team.
  • Gather useful information from equipment operators and provide timely updates about equipment status, repair needs, parts, delays, and next steps.
  • Ask for assistance when work is beyond the employee’s experience, training, authorization, or available tools and resources.
  • Perform other duties as assigned that are consistent with the position.

Qualifications:

  • Two-year diesel, heavy equipment, or related technical degree, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with Caterpillar, John Deere, Komatsu, Volvo, or comparable heavy construction equipment.

  • Working knowledge of diesel‑powered construction equipment and hydraulic systems.
  • Ability to safely use common mechanic tools, precision measuring equipment, lifting equipment, and diagnostic tools.
  • Ability to read and understand service information, specifications, warning labels, schematics, and safety instructions.
  • Ability to work independently, follow verbal and written directions, and remain accountable for assigned work.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to active and remote construction sites as required.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet applicable COP driver requirements when operating company vehicles.
  • Class A CDL with required endorsements, or ability to obtain.
  • Ability to meet COP Construction drug and alcohol testing requirements.
  • Possession and maintenance of the basic personal tools established by COP for the position.
