About the AgencyThe Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services (MDRS) is a state agency dedicated to helping Mississippians with disabilities live and work independently. MDRS serves through four major programs:
Vocational Rehabilitation (VR), Vocational Rehabilitation for the Blind (VRB), Office of Special Disability Programs (OSDP), and Disability Determination Services (DDS). Services also include support through Assistive Technology, the Office of Business Development, and much more. It is the mission of MDRS to provide appropriate and comprehensive services in a timely and effective manner. The Transition Services Coordinator supports the statewide implementation and coordination of transition services for students and youth with disabilities, generally ages 14–24. Under the direction of the Transition Services Director, the Coordinator works with OVR staff, schools, families, community partners, and other stakeholders to promote consistent, timely, and high-quality services that prepare students and youth with disabilities for postsecondary education, training, and competitive integrated employment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Coordinate day-to-day implementation of Transition and Youth Services activities statewide.
- Conduct regular meetings with transition staff to communicate program updates, clarify expectations, identify concerns, and share best practices.
- Provide training, technical assistance, and ongoing support to counselors, managers, and other field staff regarding transition services.
- Work closely with the Pre-ETS Coordinator and other program staff to promote consistency across transition and youth programs.
- Collaborate with district and regional staff to identify service gaps and assist with development of strategies to improve service delivery.
- Maintain the Transition Counselor Master List and other program tracking tools to ensure accurate school and district assignments.
- Assist field staff with resolving transition-related service delivery issues and elevate significant concerns to the Transition Services Director.
- Support coordination of referrals and communication between schools and OVR staff.
- Maintain regular communication with school districts and other educational partners regarding transition services.
- Participate in meetings with the Mississippi Department of Education and other partners as assigned by the Transition Services Director.
- Assist with initiatives designed to strengthen transition planning, work-based learning, postsecondary preparation, and employment opportunities for students with disabilities.
- Participate in statewide committees, work groups, conferences, and technical assistance activities as assigned.
- Assist with implementation of agreements and collaborative initiatives established between OVR, school districts, MDE, and other partners.
- Review Transition-related data to identify trends, service gaps, referral patterns, and areas needing improvement.
- Review AACE, Tableau, and other available reports to support accurate Transition case reporting and program monitoring.
- Track schools served, student referrals, counselor assignments, service activity, and other established performance measures.
- Prepare routine Transition Services reports for review by the Transition Services Director.
- Assist with quarterly and annual program reporting by compiling statewide data and identifying accomplishments, challenges, and areas requiring follow-up.
