Job Description

The Binghamton University Libraries seek an innovative, collaborative, and proactive Media and Emerging Technologies Learning Specialist to support multimedia production, emerging technology services, and experiential learning in the Libraries. The Specialist will create a welcoming and inclusive environment that fosters creativity, collaboration, and hands‑on learning experiences for students, faculty, and staff across disciplines.

The Media and Emerging Technologies Learning Specialist coordinates multimedia and technology‑enabled learning spaces, including recording studios and related production and emerging technology environments, while remaining responsive to evolving campus needs. The position is responsible for the day‑to‑day operation of designated spaces and services, training users in the effective use of hardware and software, and maintaining equipment, supplies, and operational workflows. The Specialist also supports daily Maker Lab services and operations as needed, including during periods of high demand or staff absence.

Working collaboratively with Library personnel and campus partners, the Specialist supports the integration of multimedia and technology‑enhanced learning into curricular and co‑curricular experiences through consultations, classroom visits, workshops, and project‑based learning opportunities.

This position reports to the Assistant Director for Digital Scholarship Services.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Oversees the day‑to‑day operations of library recording studios and related multimedia or emerging technology spaces, including management of facilities, services, equipment, technology, and supplies.
  • Supports Maker Lab services and operations as needed, including during peak usage periods or when the Maker Lab Coordinator is unavailable, by assisting patrons with equipment, workflows, and space use and contributing to a collaborative and effective user experience.
  • Plans and delivers workshops, consultations, classroom visits, and outreach activities that promote multimedia creation and technology‑enabled learning.
  • Provides instructional and consultative support to students, faculty, staff, and library colleagues in the use of multimedia technologies and the development of audiovisual and digital content. This may occasionally include evening and weekend hours.
  • Collaborates with colleagues across the Libraries to support technology lending, Maker Lab services, and the identification of technologies that support teaching, learning, research, and creative activity.
  • Promotes accessibility and inclusive design in multimedia creation and publishing, including captioning and related best practices, and maintains foundational knowledge of copyright and fair use considerations.
  • Conducts routine maintenance and coordinates equipment installation, repair, and service.
  • Evaluates and assesses services through usage statistics, user feedback, and other assessment measures to support continuous improvement.
  • Collaborates on outreach and marketing efforts to promote multimedia and emerging technology services across the University.
  • Remains current on developments in multimedia production, creative technologies, and emerging technologies relevant to academic libraries.
  • Submits mandatory and requested reports, documentation, and information in a timely manner.
  • Serves as a resource for student employees and develops training, maintenance, and operational procedures to support effective and sustainable services.
  • Serves as a positive champion for the Libraries, internally and externally, in alignment with the overall mission and current priorities.
  • Participates in a work culture that promotes diversity and anti‑racism and actively works to eliminate or mitigate the effects of systemic racism and bias.
